A plated silver contemporary copy of a siliqua of Gratian (AD 367-383), dating to the period AD 367-383 (Reece period 19). RESTITVTOR REIP reverse type depicting the Emperor standing right in military dress holding labarum and palladium. Cf. RIC IX, p. 62, no. 6 for the reverse type. This coin combines an obverse of Gratian struck with a reverse type used by Valens at Arles between AD 364-367. A second example, seemingly from the same or very similar dies, was previously recorded through the PAS in West Berkshire (WMID-12C1B3), the visible copper-alloy core on the current example c…

A copper-alloy core of a contemporary copy of a Roman siliqua of Valentinian I, c.364-367 AD. Reverse: RESTITV-TOR REIP, Emperor standing facing holding labarum and Victory on a globe. Traces of an added white metal coating are visible on all surfaces. This coin appears to copy RIC IX no. 7a. Nummi were struck of this type, but they have an officina letter after ANT for the mintmark (c.f. RIC 11a) Comparison of the style of the coin with siliquae and nummi in the British Museum collection suggests the coin is a contemporary copy, probably made in the West. It is interesting to note …

A contemporary copy of a Roman siliqua of Valens, c.364-378 AD, with a reverse type used by Constantius II (337-61) at Arles, c. 357-61. This is an irregular copy of a siliqua with copper-alloy core, plated surfaces and irregular types. Reverse: The legend VOTIS/XXX/MVLTIS/XXXX (letter V's inverted) within a wreath. For reverse type, see RIC VIII, p. 223, nos. 253-4 Plated copies of siliquae or not uncommon, and it is also not uncommon for forgers to combine types of different emperors. This is a fine example.

A Roman silver siliqua (unclipped), contemporary copy of a coin of Valens, c.364-378 AD. Reverse: PAX RO-MANORVM, Emperor standing facing, head right, holding labarum and (Victory on a globe). 'Antioch' mint prototype. The reverse type is normally associated with the inscription RESTITVTOR REI PVBLICAE (although without a seated captive to right), so the coin might be a loose copy of RIC IX, p. 273, no. 7a. The obverse legend D N VALE - NS P F AG is only recorded in RIC for a contemporary copy of a coin at Rome - RIC IX p. 118, 10dnote. Rosette-diademed busts are not uncommon at Ant…
