A complete partly polished flint axehead of Neolithic date. It is of regular, quadrilateral form with fairly straight cutting edge, with one very slight chip, and sides narrowing to slight butt. There is polish with relatively deep abrasion grooves limited mainly to the cutting edge and partly to the sides. The central portion of the axe has notable areas of gloss wihtin the flake scars. this is possibly the residues of adhesive used to fix the axe to a handle, if this is the case this is a rare occurrance on axeheads. The surface is a varied medium brown in colour and there is a rece…

Two polished flint axeheads 1: Nearly complete , blade edge is missing, partially polished flint axehead of Neolithic date. The polish is restricted to high areas, the blade area and the long sides. Numerous flake scars remain and there is a relatively square butt. The break at the blade end exposes a pale grey flint but elsewhere the flint is stained pale to dark reddish-brown. It measures 140mm in length, 75mm in width, and 36mm in thickness, it is 462g in weight. 2: A nearly complete, most of blade missing, partially polished flint axehead of Neolithic date. A complete, but somewhat rolled/abraded, flaked flint axehead. In form the axehead expands from a narrow butt to a broad rounded cutting edge. Measuring 170mm in length, 61mm in width and 40mm thick. The axehead is so abraded that the sharp edges to all the flake scars have been lost, the cutting edge is also blunt. The flint is a mottled, pale grey in colour and has one smallish area of cortex on one edge. A few small sub-circular fossiliserous voids are visible on the surface. The axehead is well made with all-over even flaking. There is no obvious polishing, although the abrasion m…

A complete polished flint axehead with a unusual and distinctive cream colouring with irregular brown blotches. This axehead measures 125mm in length, 52mm in width, at the blade end, and is 30mm thick. Residual flake scars can be seen beneath the all over polish. The cutting edge appears to have been retouched, post polishing, on one face only, one large flake scar and several smaller ones can be seen. The blade edge, when viewed head on, is slightly twisted at one end. The lenticular cross-section has slightly rounded edges. Linear iron marks from repeated plough contact can be…

Complete but very small flaked flint axehead, with slight polishing. The sides are convex, the butt is rounded and the cross-section is lenticular. The polishing is restricted to the higher areas of each face (very restricted on one face) and the edge of one side only - none is present on the oppsite side or the curved cutting edge at the wider end. The lack of polish on the cutting edge and one side, together with the small size, suggest that the axe may have been cut down from a larger axe, though as the existing polish is close to the unpolished edges there should only have been …

An incomplete polished flint axehead of Neolithic date. It is missing the butt end, due to snapping. It is struck from a mottled grey flint. It is broadly rectangular in form, pointed oval in cross section and flaring towards the crescentric cutting edge. The cutting edge has retouch/use wear present on both faces. Flake removal is present on the outer edges, likely caused through post-depositional damage. There are six areas of spalling, cause unknown. This axe measures 101.21mm in length, 49.05mm in width at the cutting edge, 32.21mm in width at butt end, 19.01mm in thickness …

An unpatinated and part polished flint axehead of Neolithic date. It is struck from a dark grey/brown flint and has relatively straight sides with a pointed-oval shaped cross section. The blade end is roughly crescentic in form but has suffered from some damage to the cutting edge itself resulting in uneven flake removal. Both faces have extensive and fine flake removal and the remains of polished surfaces are visible particularly in higher areas of the faces and towards the blade ends. Areas of polishing at the blade end towards the end of flake scars indicates that it was probably n…
