Record ID: SF-10BC84
Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A copper-alloy late Anglo-Saxon weight. This weight is of the type known as polyhedral or cubo-octahedral, and is cube-shaped with its corners cut off. It measures 8mm by 8mm in size. Every face of the weight has two parallel rows of three ring-and-dot indentations and a border of small straight incisions. This weight is 3.85g, which is unusual as the Viking weight system is usually between 24g and 26.6g, however it could possibly be a one sixth weight. These weights date from the mid 9th to mid 10th century and are common in Scandinavia.

A very worn circular lead disc measuring 17mm in diameter and 4mm thick. On one face there can be seen a moulded design which is no longer clear but appears to be cross within a spade shaped shield. The other face has no visible decoration. No parallel could be found for this object but it seems possible that it may be a weight of some sort, especially as it is fairly thick. It is also perhaps most likely to be medieval in date.

A very unusual possible lead weight. It is circular in shape with a diameter of 17mm and a thickness of 7mm. Slightly off centre on one face there is a lattice work indentation, which is circular in outline with a diameter of 11.5mm. No parallel could be found for this object but it seems most likely that it functioned as a weight of some sort. Its date is unknown but it seems most likely to be medieval, or possibly even late early medieval, as this lattice design was used during this period.

A complete lead shield shaped weight, measuring 57mm in length, 41mm in width and 15mm thick. The back face of this weight is flat and the front face is convex with an indented pattern of some sort in its centre, which is no longer clear. The front face also has a indented boarder with diagonal grooves within it, perhaps representing rope. This weight belongs to a very distinctive group of shield shaped weights. Many other examples have a royal insignia, either one lion rampant, or three lions passant, or a crowned lis. The dating of the weights is uncertain, some seem to belong t…

A Roman lead steelyard weight. This weight is biconical in shape, measuring 33.68mm in height and 34.33mm in width, at its widest point. Iron can be seen protruding from the centre of the damaged terminal/apex of the weight, this probably originally formed the iron loop. There is also old damage to one side of the weight.

A lead decorated spindle whorl, circular in shape measuring 16.70mm in diameter with a central circular perforation measuring 4.11mm in diameter. This weight is flat, 5.59mm in thickness and the upper face is decorated with four evenly spaced protruding knops. Decorated lead spindle whorls were used both in the Roman and medieval periods, this example could therefore date to either period.

Square lead plaque, perhaps a weight. It measures 17 x 16.5 mm and is 5 mm thick. One face is decorated with a lattice of unevenly spaced lines. It weighs 13.19g (0.46 oz) so could perhaps have been intended as a half-ounce weight; if so, the decoration could be a portcullis stamp.
