Object type: BUTTON AND LOOP FASTENER
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A cast copper-alloy complete button-and-loop fastener of a form which represents a hybrid of Wilds' Class II and III (Wild 1970 138-139, fig 1). Wild dates Class II to mid 1st to 2nd century AD and Calss III to AD 50-150, this example is therefore likely to be broadly of a smilar date. As the fasteners are often found on military sites they are believed to have possibly been items of military equipment. It measures 29.15mm in length and 21.31mm in width. As with all button and loop fasteners this example is characterised by a button like head from the back of which a shank w…

Object type: DRESS HOOK
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Description: Silver gilt 16th century cap-hook or hat-hook in the form of a Tudor rose. On the front face the rose has five moulded petals and a central protruding circular boss. The back face is flat and has a now incomplete pin across its middle; this pin is soldered on and incomplete due to an old break. Discussion: Other Tudor cap-hooks are known from elsewhere, Gaimster (2002, 169-173) identifies them as a main category of Tudor dress accessory and it believed that they were used to embellish the hats of the Tudor elite. This example is very similar to a complete cap-hook fro…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch fragment, lower bow and part of the flat panel from a early Anglo-Saxon brooch. There is a longitudinal decorative band running down the centre of the bow and below the bow transverse grooves delimit the start of the flat panel. Surviving length is 17.94mm and width is 17.38mm. All edges worn and damaged due to old breaks. Both faces are black probably due to exposure to fire, perhaps indicating that this brooch was originally from a cremation cemetary.

Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Copper alloy brooch, Colchester derivative type with Polden Hill variant spring attachment. Missing foot with catchplate, spring, pin. The spring was held by a rear hook and by enclosed wing ends, 6mm wide - these contain an iron-like corrosion, but it does not react to a magnet. The wings have a single angled groove and five grooves at the terminals, with slight notching of some of the intervening narrow ribs. The bow tapers slightly and is oval in section, with slight angles at the sides. A central band of three grooves define two reserved notched narrow ribs. Width 31mm, surviving …

Copper alloy brooch, Colchester derivative type with a rear hook. Missing both wings, spring, pin; damaged catchplate; corroded/abraded surfaces, especially the bow front. The bow has a slightly convex back and rounded front, and a stront crest at the top in profile. It tapers to a smal;l foot knob. Two centre grooves define a centre rib which may have had horizontal hatching and there are traces of possible concave mouldings each side. The footknob is marked by a slight transverse groove. Length 41mm, surviving width 6.5mm. Although this could be a standard rear hook type it has many…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk

Description: Incomplete silver gilt fragment of a 16th century dress fitting, probably a hat hook or perhaps a hooked tag. The plate is incomplete due to old breaks and was probably oval in shape when complete. The front face is decorated with a protruding V-shaped moulding with smaller, possibly foliate mouldings, surrounding it. The edges of the plate have V-shaped notches cut into it. On the back face, near to the complete end of the plate, there is a fragment of a silver rectangular shaft, which is soldered onto the plate. This shaft is projecting out at right angles to the plat…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman strap-mounted terret. The terret has a large circular upper loop measuring 36.03mm externally and 22.01mm internally.
