CURATOR'S REPORT Circumstances of Discovery This small late Roman gold and silver hoard was found by Mr D. Cummings and Ms D. Cook with metal detectors, July-August 2007. The coins ranged from surface finds to a depth of 3"-4" within the ploughsoil. The hoard contains a total of 60 coins including one gold solidus, 38 silver siliquae, many of which are clipped, and 21 broken fragments of silver siliquae. A cast copper alloy object, perhaps a button and of Roman date. It has a circular head that is slightly dished on the outer face and on the back face has an integral suspension loop. The outer face has delicate punched or stamped decoration. This consists of a central cross formed of double opposing rows of many small punched triangles, which divides the exterior surface of the head. A Roman copper alloy nummus of 4th century AD date that has been struck at least twice. The first striking seems to be a nummus of Magnentius that is probably a contemporary copy and with a reverse type of two victories standing holding a shield (VICTORIAE DD NN AVG ET CAES), c.351-353 AD, or of FELICITAS REI PVBLICE type with emperor standing, c. 350-1. This is overstruck by a nummus of Constantius II with reverse type of soldier spearing fallen horseman (FEL TEMP REPARATIO), which ia a contemporary copy, c. 355-361 AD.

An incomplete copper alloy Roman Colchester derivative Polden Hill brooch of flat wing ends type. It is missing part of the rear hook, the end of one wing, the spring and axis bar, as well as most of the catchplate due to old breaks. The brooch has undecorated semi-cylindrical wings with flat circular ends. The ends are pierced with circular perforations to hold in place the now missing axis bar.
