Cast circular copper alloy escutcheon from a hanging bowl of sixth- or seventh-century date. The disc, which is convex on the ornamented face, is 50mm in diameter and 2mm in thickness, but domed or dished to an overall depth of 6.5mm. The central underside shows a scar of corrosion product apparently corresponding to a solder by which it was attached to the underside of the vessel. The upper side is cast in relief showing recessed fields around a pattern reserved in bronze, the fields still being partly filled with enamel in which a red colour is still visible. The design consists of …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy decorative pouring spout in the shape of a dogs head, in very good condition. The curvilinear terminal, which would presumably have fitted into a vessel or leather container is incomplete due to an old break. The surviving spout measures 46.51mm in length and 22mm in width. The dog is holding a barrel in its mouth with a hole through this (5.06mm diameter), through which liquid would have been poured. The dog has a short nose and oval shaped incised eyes, its ears fairly small and are lying flat down against its head. There are five transverse groov…

A complete copper-alloy probable vessel lid handle in the shape of a small bird. Measuring 26.6mm in length and 12.2mm in width, at its widest point. This bird has an oval shaped three dimensional solid body with a flat underside. There are two small roughly triangular projections representing the tips of its folded wings, the wings are also defined by deep longitudinal grooves on their underside and small diagonal grooves on their sides, to represent the feathers. The bird has a broad central tail which curves downwards slightly towards its terminal. The neck of the bird projects…

A complete cast copper-alloy decorative pouring spout in the shape of a dogs head, in very good condition. This spout measures 78.6mm in length and 18mm in width. The dog is holding a barrel in its mouth with a hole through this (7.7mm diameter), through which liquid would have been poured. The dog has a short upturned nose and a heavy brow, its ears are large and reactangular and project above the sides of the head. There is a central longitudinal ridge running down the top of its head. The neck of the dog is curvilinear, tapering and open topped. Similar decorative spouts are illus…

Solid cast copper-alloy leg from a vessel, perhaps a skillet or ewer. The leg itself is roughly triangular in section, slightly bow-sided, deeper than it is wide, and flat at the back. It tapers in thickness from 24mm at the top down to 14mm at the 'ankle'and in width similarly from 18mm to 11mm at the ankle. The foot is shaped like a pointed boot, 24mm from heel to toe and 14mm wide. The entire leg was attached to a copper-alloy vessel, the thickness of which remains brazed to the top of the leg, though all surrounding sherds of the vessel body itself are broken away and lost. The obj…

A cast copper-alloy vessel leg and foot, measuring 62mm in total length the leg is 16mm in width 16.3mm in thickness, it has a triangular cross-section. It tapers towards the foot which consists of an out turned foot, with a moulded ridge across the 'ankle.' The foot is rounded on its upper face and measures 14.9mm in length, 25.5mm in width and 14.4mm in thickness. This fairly delicate cast leg could be from a variety of vessels, including an ewers or skillets and is most likely to be medieval or post medieval in date.

A probable incomplete cast copper-alloy vessel handle. This probable handle is curvilinear, rectangular in plan and roughly semi-circular in cross-section, with a rounded outer face and a flat inner face. It measures 56.4mm in length, 12.6mm in width and c7mm in thickness. Projecting from the centre of the outer face of this probable handle there is an integral three dimensional moulded animal, measuring 33.8mm in length, 19.1mm in width and 13.6mm in thickness. It is lying down along the length of the handle with its back and front legs tucked under its body and its front p…

An incomplete copper-alloy possible vessel mount. It is likely that this mount would have been lozenge shaped when complete, it now measures 32mm in surviving length and 25.5mm in width. It is slightly curvilinear and projecting from the complete terminal and the one surviving central corner there are rounded globular knops. There is also a longitudinal central groove running down the front face. On the back face there is a very small trace of what might be a white solder material , however too little remains to be certain. If this is solder this is the likely method of attaching …

Fragment of heavy corrugated cast staple handle(?) attachment, probably from bucket or cauldron, found within a hoard. Decorated externally with five heavy ribs/corrugations, plain internally. At the base of these ribs is the remains of a transverse internal socket. The top, broken end of the ribs, is very thin in places. All breaks are ancient. Medium brown/green patina with paler green corrosive encrustations. Appears to be a high lead casting. cf cast staples from cauldron in Llyn Fawr hoard & from bucket(?) in Hatfield Broad Oak hoard (Davies 1929 - BAR67, Fig 8.1)

A copper-alloy vessel lid, it is almost circular in shape, 44mm in diameter, slightly concave and bevelled at the edges, one segment is turned sharply upwards towards the spout. The thumb-piece is in the form of a swimming duck, its body is rectangular in shape, the neck slants backwards, the head is rounded and the beak has a triangular cross-section. The hinge tongue behind is broken. There is an identical vessel lid from the Verulamium excavations, it is believed to have come from a tall-necked, bulbous-bodied jug and is Roman in date (S. Frere 1984, p48-51, Fig 18).
