Object type: BUTTON AND LOOP FASTENER
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A cast copper alloy terminal or head, probably from a Roman button and loop fastener of Wild Class III. The terminal survives intact, however the loop for attachment is now missing due to old breaks. It comprises a plate that is teardrop in shape, sub-oval in section with a flat back and moulded decorative front face. At the base of the object where the plate comes to a point is a moulded longitudinal projecting knop, which is oval shaped in plan and sub-triangular in section with a prominent central ridge. This is decorated on either side with small recessed triangular fields that w…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete Roman hinged T-shaped brooch that is missing the lower half of the bow, catchplate and most of the pin due to old breaks. The brooch has cylindrical/tubular wings that encase the axis bar and have double parallel incised grooves on the upper surfaces at both ends. At the rear of the wings is a central rectangular slot through which extends the remains of the hinged pin. At the head of the brooch where the bow joins the wings is a small projecting longitudinal crest or moulding that appears to be complete. The bow itself is flat, triangular in plan and tapers towards the n…

Object type: HARNESS FITTING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A Roman copper alloy incomplete harness fitting or skirted terret ring. It has an incomplete pole, which acted as a rein guide, from which flares an integral 'skirt' that would have covered the pole which is circular in section and is 4.45mm in thickness. The integrally moulded skirt flares from beneath the hoop. It is a lozenge shape in plan with a convex profile. The edges of the skirt have been shaped with notches to give a regular patterned edge, a little worn in places. The skirt is 33.02mm in length and 17.74mm in width. The terret weighs 14g. Beneath the 'skirt', projecting fro…

Object type: CART FITTING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A cast copper alloy terminal in the form of an eagle's head, probably a cart fitting of Roman date. It is hollow and would presumably have once been attached to the cart by means of a now missing iron tang. At the base of the terminal is a raised collar with moulded double circumferential band and an uneven wavy bottom edge that is perhaps deliberately shaped or simply resultant from post-depositional damage. Above the collar the eagle's head emerges from two moulded leaves or petals that project upwards and outwards to either side of the head. The head of the eagle has both moulded an…

A cast copper alloy Late Roman amphora-shaped strap end, complete except for the now missing iron pin. It has a flat lozenge-shaped plate with bevelled exterior edges. At the attachment end the plate expands horizontally, as well as thickening to a flattened top edge. At each side of the upper edge are short projecting triangular knops and integral circular suspension loops that are set at right angles to the plane of the frame and contain traces of the now missing pin.
