A complete but distorted gold probable finger ring. Consisting of a simple hoop with a rectangular section. The outer face is smooth however in one area there are tiny traces of possible vertical grooves, these may be original decoration or due to damage/wear, they are extremely faint. Discussion: This finger ring is very undiagnostic and could possibly be Roman or later in date, but it is impossible to certify that it was deposited prior to 1708 as stipulated in the Treasure Act. Dimensions: Measuring 17.16mm by 15.33mm externally and 15.53mm by 13.61mm internally, the hoop is …

A finger ring examined under the Treasure Act by the British Museum. Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate gold content for the ring of 50% and silver content of approximately 47%; it weighs 4.78 grams. The ring has a flat, ovoid bezel drawn out at the shoulders into two narrow, wiry strips tapering to points, which were originally wound together to form the hoop, but are now separated; diameter of bezel, 20 mm (max). The decoration of the bezel appears to have been cast (rather than punched as would be usual on Viking-period rings) and consis…

The bezel is rectangular and the shoulder is angular and tapers into the narrower hoop, which has a D-shaped section. Dimensions: 15.4mm in length, 10.6mm in maximum width. Discussion: This finger ring is possibly of Henig's type VIII (M. Henig, A Corpus of Roman Engraved Gemstones from the British Isles (BAR 8), Oxford 1978), due to its angular shoulders. The precious metal content of this object fulfils the requirements of the Treasure Act in that it is greater than 10 %.

This comprises transverse moulded projections, from which the front face of the hoop has incised cabed decoration extending towards the old breaks of the hoop. The bezel is circular in form with a central circular recess that probably once contained enamelling or a glass setting that is now missing due to old breaks. It measures 18.12mm i…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman finger ring. Half of the hoop and the setting are missing due to old breaks. The remains of the hoop have a flattened, oval shaped section and expand horizontally to a flattened bezel. One incomplete end is flattened against the back of the bezel due to post-depositional damage. The bezel is oval shaped in form and has an oval shaped recess that would originally have held in place a setting, possibly of glass or similar material, that is now missing due to old breaks. The entire object has a dark green patina with possible traces of an added white…

Silver finger ring. Flattened bezel, pointed oval in outline, with DE two dots M rather roughly incised on it. Shoulders thickened and notched to form the pointed ends of the bezel. D-section hoop c.3mm wide, 2mm thick, worn at the back. Internal diameters 18 x 115mm.
