The bezel in a flattened rectangular shape, its outer face decorated with a engraved zigzag line horizontally across the lower end, each point of the zigzag surrounded by three dots, and a bird, probably with a branch in its beak. Description: A complete silver finger ring of Henig's type VIII dating to the Roman period, c. 200-300 AD. The ring demonstrates a circular plano-convex sectioned hoop, with characteristic 'keeled' shoulders that expand into a slightly raised sub-oval bezel. The shoulders themselves demonstrate identical incised decoration on each side in the form of a chevron at their base, above which are two slightly oblique parallel lines that connect to the bezel. Each side of the ring between the shoulders and the bezel is additionally decorated with closely spaced incised nicks, while on the be…

Description: A complete silver late medieval finger ring. The band is rectangular in cross-section. The outer face is faceted and on each facet is an inscribed letter, which together read '+IESVI.DE.RVERIEHEMEDVHEZMIE X'. The final letter 'X' is flanked by a transverse dotted line to its left and a rectangle of fine parallel grooves to its right. This is presumably a blundered religious inscription. Date: 13th to 15th century Dimensions: Diameter: 20.55mm, width: 3.09mm, thickness: 1.42mm, weight: 1.93g Discussion: An number of examples with an inscription in a similar style …

A Roman finger ring with carved gem setting, similar in form to Henig Type II (Guiraud Type 2) finger rings. It has a hoop that is D-shaped in form and section, expanding to broad shoulders and a flattened bezel. At the centre of the bezel is an oval intaglio setting, probably carnelian, with engraved hippocamp facing left. Some slight damage is apparent to one edge of the setting. All surfaces of hte ring have extensive copper-alloy corrosion, however, beneath the corrosion products can be seen silver surfaces suggesting this is in fact a corroded silver or base silver rather than a …

Description: A complete silver Roman finger ring bezel. It is oval in shape with a flattened reverse and a rounded outer face. There is a slight raised rim around the edge of the outer face and in the centre the raised design of a male bust facing left with a caduceus behind it, identifying it as Mercury. There is little evidence of how the object would have been attached to a ring originally, but such a function seems likely. Dimensions: Length: 11.97mm, width: 9.04mm, thickness: 1.42mm, weight: 0.59g Discussion: Henig (1978, 213, no.208) lists a gold setting in a silver ring f…

Description: A small fragment of a medieval silver finger ring. It is rectangular in cross section. The outer face bears the inscription 'NAZA', which probably formed part of the longer inscription '(IHS/IESVS) NAZA[RENVS]' or Jesus of Nazareth. Dimensions: Length: 21.85mm, width: 3.71mm, thickness: 1.11mm, weight: 0.74g Discussion: Similar religious inscriptions are found on a number of other simple silver fingers on the PAS database. These include a fourteenth century example from Oxfordshire inscribed '+IHC NAZARENV' (BERK-E72186), a cruder, thirteenth century example fro…

Description: A complete medieval silver gilt finger ring, the hoop has a lozenge shaped bezel which is incised with two clasped hands and the outer face of the hoop itself carries the inscription II E SVS, presumably meaning Jesus. Dimensions: Internal diameter: 19.20mm External diameter: 21.57mm Weight: 2.61g Height of hoop: 3.38mm Height of bezel: 6.89mm Discussion: This type of finger ring is a 'Fede' (Italian meaning 'faith') ring, such rings were a popular love token from the 12th century and remained so well into 19th century. The hands joined symbolised the…

Description: Complete silver finger ring now squashed flat and with a much damaged outer face. The hoop has a rectangular section. Its outer face is decorated with borders consisting of tiny diagonal grooves and within these there are stars and crosses and possibly foliate motifs. The word 'MIZ[P]AH' is also visible in relief on the exterior of the band. Unfortunately most of the original design is now destroyed by deep grooves and scratches, perhaps caused by damage whilst in the plough soil. Dimensions: Diameter: 27.74mm (as squashed flat) Height: 7.81mm (of hoop) Thickn…

Description: Medieval iconographic silver-gilt finger ring, probably fifteenth century in date. The ring has a ridged, bi-faceted bezel; each facet is crudely engraved with a Saint. The hoop is D-shaped in section and decorated with a series of raised diagonal bands, with transverse grooves across them giving a beaded affect. Those in the shoulder area have additional decoration in the form of incised crosses between them. Discussion: A number of medieval iconographic finger rings have been published by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport in the Treasure Annual Reports, for …
