A copper-alloy Iron Age to Roman cosmetic mortar, dating to 100 BC - AD 200. It is a centre-looped mortar with a crescent bow and slightly convex walls; it has a shallow U-shape sectioned groove. The terminals are very worn and they might have been shaped into bull's head. The circular loop is circular and protrudes form the lower edge of the bow.The surfaces are heavily abraded. Cf. Jackson ( 2010), several examples have knobbed and bull's heads terminals (cf. nos. 59, 110, 144, 173). Although very worn the terminals appear to have an overall sub-triangular shape, which recalls …

An incomplete copper-alloy centre-looped cosmetic mortar of late Iron Age to Roman date. It has a crescent shaped bow, missing one half/end due to old breaks, that is V-shaped in section and expands at its back towards the centre. At the centre are the remains of an incomplete but integrally cast suspension loop of uncertain form, while at the surviving terminal end there is an incomplete globular projection perhaps intended to be stylised and zoomorphic in nature. The central groove is U-shaped in form and measures approximately 3.5mm in maximum depth. The entire object has a dark gr…

It is large, circular and square in cross-section, flanked by D-sectioned straight struts with neatly scrolled perforated ends. The mortar survives in very fine condition with a pale green patina. Cosmetic mortars like this one woul…

A near complete cast copper-alloy Late Iron Age to Roman cosmetic mortar. It is missing the top of the suspension loop due to old breaks but is otherwise complete. The bow is crescentic in form with a deep central groove that gives it a U-shaped section. It has moulded terminals at each end that at first glance suggest a phallic form to the entire object, however the terminals are in fact in the form of heads. At one end is a slightly flattened oval shaped head with raised circumferential collar that has a crudely rendered human face on the side facing the back of the bow. This consis…

A copper-alloy Late Iron Age to Roman cosmetic mortar with a central loop of very unusual form. The bow is crescent shaped and is 54.86mm long, 11.31mm wide across its centre, 9.69mm thick across its centre and the internal longitudinal groove is 6.15mm deep. One terminal of the bow has a large rounded knob with a moulding where it joins the bow. This looks phallic, especially when viewed from the side, however, there is a possiblity that it had a human face on it as when viewed straight on there is a faint transverse groove, which might be a hair line. The other terminal is more corr…
