Object type: PILGRIM BADGE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete lead or lead alloy medieval or early post-medieval pilgrim's badge. It is lozenge-shaped with a long strip attached to the reverse and folded flat against it, which was probably used for attachment. The front is decorated with a line of raised dots around the outside and a seated figure wearing long robes in the centre, probably Henry VI. The tip of one end is missing, but the item otherwise survives in fairly good condition. A lozenge-shaped badge depicting Henry VI standing is illustrated by Spencer (1998, 190, no.208a) and a small number of similar badges depicting…

A crude, cast circular lead-alloy pilgrim badge probably of early 16th century date, measuring 17.70mm in diameter. It has a border of three concentric circles, the outer one is formed of small pellets and within this is a circle of larger pellets and then finally a circle of small pellets within this. In the centre is the standing facing figure of Henry VI holding the orb and sceptre. On the reverse there is an integral pin and clasp. This badge is similar in style to a slightly larger one from London, which also has a pellet border and the same basic central figure; it was excava…

Lead-alloy pilgrim's badge depicting St Andrew, now bent in half. An upright rectangular plaque, it has a surviving projection at one lower corner that would originally have extended to a stitching loop; the other three corners are broken. St Andrew is in the centre of the plaque, wearing a striped or pleated gown drawn in at the waist; his limbs are splayed as if attached to an X-shaped cross. He faces the observer, but his face is very crude indeed with two large round eyes, a round nose and two large straight lips filling the whole of the space. The arms emerge from the go…

Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Unusual form of hooked tag. The plate is made from lead alloy, with a tall flat-topped cylindrical central boss around which is a raised circle. Outside the circle the edge is fragmentary, but looks lumpy and may originally have been a ring of pellets. On the reverse is the scar from a missing loop, which ran straight across the upper part of the plate. At the base of the plate is a separate copper-alloy hook, made from circular-section wire and set into a blob of lead alloy. This hooked tag is large, and quite complex in manufacture, yet made from a very cheap alloy. The metal m…
