Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
A complete iron Roman brooch of P-shaped type. At the head of the brooch is a separately cast iron axis bar, which has globular terminals and is held in place by the flattened head of the bow being folded around the axis bar. A separately iron spring chord and spring of at least four coils are coiled around the axis bar. To one side of the spring coils is a separate iron pin that is cylindrical in form, perhaps missing its tip due to old breaks, and coiled around the axis bar. This suggests the originaly pin may have broken, the surviving pin a replacement to enable the brooch to cont…

Object type: HAMMER
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
A complete iron hammer, possibly a hand hammer of Roman date. It is rectangular in form with a central oval head that has a central circular aperture retaining some of its encrusted soil. At each end the head tapers to rectangular chisel edges, one of which is pointed the other flattened and perhaps missing its outer edge due to old breaks. Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
An iron arrowhead of probable Medieval date. It is triangular in form with slight mid ribs and narrow barbs that taper close to the integral socket. The socket itself is circular in section, flaring towards the attachment end. This arrowhead measures 68.86mm in length, 16.47mm in width, 9.58mm in thickness/diameter at socket (3.54mm in thickness at blade), and 10.62g in weight.
Close parallels to this arrowhead are noted in examples published from London (LMMC: p. 69, Types 14-15; LON-F9DC8D, LON-ECF872, see also GLO-BF0875, SF-8C4B17). These barbed and tanged arrowheads are dated …

Object type: PADLOCK
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
An iron padlock of probable Post-Medieval date. It is triangular in form, hollow, and with the remains of a vertical rib or ridge running down the centre of the front face. This has a corroded rectangular aperture through which the key would have originally passed to enable the locking mechanism to work. At the top of the casing is a narrow transverse rectangular rib from which extends the locking arm, which is U-shaped in form. One end of the arm has the remains of a corroded bolt or hinge, while the other slots into the transverse ridge, locking it in place. A casting seam is visibl…

Object type: AXE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
A complete, but encrusted and corroded, iron axe head of possible Roman date. It has a curved and flaring blade that has a triangular longitudinal section. The axe expands to the poll end, which curves downwards, is flat and rectangular in form. The eye through which the axe would have originally have been hafted is oval with an integral projecting lug at the blade end on the upper surface. All surfaces of the axe show signs of extensive corrosive iron products and encrustation, but the axe appears complete. It measures 171mm in length, 40.09mm in width at poll end, 46.23mm in height …

Object type: SWORD
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete iron broadsword with a basket hilt in very good condition. The basket hilt and about a quarter of the blade survive, the rest of the blade is missing due to old breaks. The basket hilt is c175mm in length and c185mm in width. It is openwork and the pommel of the hilt is now missing. The idea of a basket hilt to protect the hand came to England and then to Scotland from the Scandinavian and German sword makers. The double edged blade, hence the name broadsword, measures c194mm in surviving length and 30mm in width, it is tapering gently towards its missing terminal. …

Object type: PADLOCK
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
Fragment of curved sheet, made from corroded iron interleaved with copper alloy. On the outside of the sheet are two copper-alloy bands running around the curve, one 4 mm wide and one tapering from 7 mm to 5 mm wide. The proportions and degree of curvature are right for this to be part of the case of an iron padlock which has been brazed together and coated with copper-alloy. The copper-alloy strips are unusual, but may be for reinforcing or purely decorative. Iron and copper-alloy padlocks date to the medieval period.

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
Iron object which looks very like a Roman vessel mount. It is drop-shaped, and curves from side to side as if to fit around the curved side of a vessel. At the broader end the object turns towards the convex face through a little over 90 degrees to form a thicker angled platform; this could perhaps have been part of a handle attachment. The iron is in good condition but is laminating slightly at the edges, showing that it is made from wrought iron. Such vessel mounts are normally made in copper alloy and have a loop at the wider top.
