Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

A complete early Anglo-Saxon polychrome glass bead. This bead is fairly large and is circular in shape, it measures 30mm in diameter, is 9.4mm thick and has a central circular perforation which measures 7mm in diameter. The glass is black in colour and has yellow glass inclusions. Around the centre of the edge of this bead there is faint circumferencial zig-zag trail. Dr. Birte Brugmann has examined this bead and believes as a circumferencial trail is present it is most likely to be late Roman or early Anglo-Saxon, dating to the 5th or 6th century (Brugmann personal comm. 9/2003). …

A circular bead probably made of glass, 19mm in diameter and 6mm thick. This bead is dark red in colour and has a circular hole through its centre which is slightly larger at one end than the other. This bead is likely to be Anglo-Saxon in date especially as it was found in association with other Anglo-Saxon objects.

Globular bead made from semi-translucent light blue glass. The bead has been made by winding glass around a core, and there are some imperfections in the surface. It measures 9.5 mm in diameter and 7.5 to 8 mm tall; the perforation is 3 mm in diameter. Small glass beads like this are hard to date; it could be anything from Iron Age to modern.

Small glass fragment, 3 mm thick and curved in two planes; therefore part of a globular rather than a cylindrical vessel. The basic colour is a translucent dusty pale pinkish-purple, within which are narrow oblique white strands. Inlaid onto the surface are three opaque white stripes which taper from 2 mm to 1 mm wide. Hugh Willmott has seen a scan and has identified it as Venetian and early to mid 16th century, probably part of the lower body of a stemmed goblet. These goblets are usually in colourless or more infrequently in blue, both with opaque white stripes, so the pinkish tin…

Object type: WINDOW GLASS
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Squarish fragment of window glass, just under 2 mm thick. The surface is lost and the glass is iridescent on both faces. Although the glass is not post-medieval, it is hard to put a precise date on it; it is probably either Roman or medieval.

Object type: BUTTON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Button made from pale yellow glass, plano-convex in shape, 16 mm in diameter and 9 mm thick. The spiral marks on the back and, less obviously, on the front show that it was made by winding molten glass into a blob. In the centre of the back are two stubs of copper-alloy wire - the remains of a loop around which the glass was wound. Glass buttons are known from medieval contexts, but tend to be a good deal smaller than this one (see, for example, the Winchester finds - Biddle 1990). The buttons from 18th- and 19th-century contexts in America do not include glass buttons of this form…

County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Bright blue bead made of wound semi-translucent glass, 7 mm in diameter and 6 mm long (measured along the perforation). The perforation is 3 mm in diameter. The bead is slightly irregular with its widest point being closer to one end than the other. The surface has a lustrous appearance which may be iridescence (caused by the decay of the glass) or which may have been deliberately made. The lustre continues over a small chip near one end of the perforation. Dating a small monochrome bead is very difficult; it could be Roman or Anglo-Saxon, or could be relatively modern.

Glass bead, 22 mm long (parallel to perforation) and 12 mm in diameter, with a perforation tapering from 5 mm in diameter at one end to 2.5 mm in diameter at the other. This polychrome bead is made from red-brown, greenish yellow and dark green opaque glass, with tiny flecks of bright acid yellow. The core of the bead is red-brown, and two red-brown bands divide it transversely into three; the overlapping ends of these bands can clearly be seen. In the three zones is a marbled abstract pattern predominantly of greenish yellow, with thin stripes of dark green and dots and stripes of…

County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Pale blue semi-translucent glass bead, made by winding the molten glass around a core. The bead is 7.5 mm long (parallel to the perforation) and 10.5 mm in diameter; the sides are unevenly curved to make a barrel shape. The perforation is 4 mm in diameter. Small monochrome glass beads are difficult to date; this one is unlikely to be medieval but may be Roman or Anglo-Saxon, and perhaps is most likely to be 7th or early 8th century AD.

Fragment of rim from a shallow dish made from tubes of dark green glass with a yellow coating, set into a background of similar dark green glass. The green glass is translucent and the yellow glass more opaque. The rim is slightly turned out and the grinding lines show that the dish was cast, not blown. This is a rare kind of glass and probably an import from Italy.
