Record ID: SF3951
Object type: WINDOW GLASS
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Fragment of Roman window glass with one original edge. A translucent pale greyish green in colour, both faces are matt but one is much rougher than the other. (This is caused by blowing a cylinder, cutting it up one side and allowing it to flatten onto a sand bed). 37.5 mm long (parallel to the original edge) and 19 mm wide, and just over 5 mm thick. The original edge is rounded, but slopes much more gently to the smoother face.

Fragment of Roman glass vessel. The glass is pale blue and perfectly translucent, with some small bubbles resulting from the blowing process. The fragment is 3 mm thick and straight, not curved, indicating that it comes from a 'prismatic' (square or rectangular) vessel. All the edges are broken.

Object type: BEAD
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Cylindrical glass bead with rounded ends, made of semi-translucent pale aquamarine or turquoise glass. It is 14 mm long and 11 mm in diameter, with a 4 mm perforation. Dating this bead has proved difficult. Cylindrical shapes are not found among pre-Roman beads. No parallel can be found in M. Guido's Prehistoric and Romano-British Glass Beads (1978). Catherine Johns of the British Museum thinks it is not Roman. This leaves early Anglo-Saxon as the most likely option, but it is an unusual colour. Leslie Webster of the British Museum has seen it and has suggested that the unusual …

Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Fragment of rim from a shallow dish made from tubes of dark green glass with a yellow coating, set into a background of similar dark green glass. The green glass is translucent and the yellow glass more opaque. The rim is slightly turned out and the grinding lines show that the dish was cast, not blown. This is a rare kind of glass and probably an import from Italy.

Fragment of 'prismatic' glass storage jar. These are square or rectangular in cross-section rather than round, and a tiny part of the angle survives on this fragment. It is made of good clear glass, a very pale blue/green in colour, with a few tiny air bubbles showing that the vessel was blown.

Fragment of cast window glass. Clear glass with many small air bubbles, it has a matt finish on one surface due to a blown cylinder being laid on sand and then cut and unrolled to form a flat pane. The other face is smoother with many fine scratches. Two edges are original and two are broken.
