Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Description: Silver gilt 16th century dress-hook, complete apart from most of the integral loop. Fragments of the sides of this loop survive and project vertically from the top edge of the plate, the loop appears to have been rectangular in shape originally. The plate is moulded in the form of a circular Tudor rose and in its centre there is a fleur-de-lis motif, when this motif is viewed the right way up the missing loop would be at its base, which probably indicates the orientation this hook was worn. The hook is soldered onto the flat back face of the plate; it is com…

Object type: DRESS HOOK
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Description: Silver gilt 16th century cap-hook or hat-hook in the form of a Tudor rose. On the front face the rose has five moulded petals and a central protruding circular boss. The back face is flat and has a now incomplete pin across its middle; this pin is soldered on and incomplete due to an old break. Discussion: Other Tudor cap-hooks are known from elsewhere, Gaimster (2002, 169-173) identifies them as a main category of Tudor dress accessory and it believed that they were used to embellish the hats of the Tudor elite. This example is very similar to a complete cap-hook fro…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Description: Incomplete silver gilt fragment of a 16th century dress fitting, probably a hat hook or perhaps a hooked tag. The plate is incomplete due to old breaks and was probably oval in shape when complete. The front face is decorated with a protruding V-shaped moulding with smaller, possibly foliate mouldings, surrounding it. The edges of the plate have V-shaped notches cut into it. On the back face, near to the complete end of the plate, there is a fragment of a silver rectangular shaft, which is soldered onto the plate. This shaft is projecting out at right angles to the plat…

Each hemisphere is decorated with three circlets in filigree there is a further smaller circle of filigree between and within each circlet. There is a silver circular knop at the top if the head. There is a circular hole in the underside of the head, which would have accommodated the now missing shaft originally. County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Description: Silver Post medieval bodkin, which is incomplete, the upper part of the bodkin is missing due to an old break below the eye. The shaft is rectangular in shape and tapers to a point. Both faces of the bodkin below the break are decorated with an incised design consisting of a flower-like motif with transverse grooves above and below it and beneath this there is a zigzag pattern, which tapers to a point. There are no maker’s marks visible. Discussion: Although the lack of maker’s marks makes this bodkin more difficult to date the engraved decoration and its form…

A fragment of terminal from a copper-alloy hook, of post-medieval date. The terminal is polyhedral, that is a cuboid with its corners cut off and has a curvilinear circular sectioned shaft projecting from one end. It measures 20.68mm in surviving length and 10.36mm in width. Although similar terminals are reminiscent of terminals from a purse bar, or even middle Anglo-Saxon pins, complete examples (e.g. SUSS-59F935) are from post-medieval hooks, perhaps for hanging items such as coats or perhaps for retaining the cords for opening high windows. Description: Silver button of circa 17th century date, incomplete due to an old break on one edge. This button is circular in shape and has a down-turned edge, which is shaped and split in places. The front face is decorated with two hearts with a crown above them. Projecting from the centre of the front face there is a loop. Discussion: This button is very similar to other examples of 17th century date such as those from Sible Hedingham, Essex (2004 T362), Cundall, North Yorkshire (2004 T212 and 213) (Treasure Annual Report 2004, 120-121, no 239, 242-243).
