A complete lead post-medieval cloth seal. It is a two-disc cloth seal folded over with the rivet from one disc pushed through the perforation of the other, and the two are joined by a connecting strip. The complete disc (Disc 1) is stamped with the pine-cone of Augsburg on a flat base with side projections, with a six-pointed star to the left. The perforated side (Disc 2) has a partial border of pellets with a bishop's crozier within (see YORYM-434541 and NMS-848772 for other examples of this design). It measures 18.52mm in diameter, 26.63mm in length, 2.99mm in thickness and weighs 6…

Lead cloth seal with one disc surviving, measuring c. 20.5 mm in diameter. Geoff Egan has identified this seal (pers comm 9/2006) as a London Dyers' Company seal from the early 17th century. It bears a standing figure, possibly an American Indian, with a bow and arrow. To either side of his lower legs are the initials T C. A similar design, but without the initials, is known on a couple of near parallels - one in the British Museum catalogue (Egan, 1995, 187, fig 36, no. 275), and the other from near Trig Lane on the Thames foreshore in the City of London. This was the location of …

Complete lead cloth seal. Disc 1 has a faintly scratched design of what may be a merchant's mark. Disc 2 has a stamp depicting a windmill - a simple building with a hipped roof and a door, set on top of a triangle which presumably represents the post, with a ladder leading up to the door. No sails are visible. No parallel to this seal has been found either in the BM collection or the Salisbury Museum collection.

Almost-complete lead cloth seal, 22 mm in diameter. Disc 2 is fragmentary, but a well-made stamp can be seen with a merchant's mark flanked with a possible T to the left and an A to the right. The mark consists of a figure 4 with long stem that runs between the T and the A to end in a lozenge. The lines of the 4 may be continued beyond the left-hand angle to form an oval above the T, and the horizontal line to the right may be extended to form a cross above the A. Disc 1 is more complete, but the only stamp that this has is the incuse initials OP. A clothier's, weaver's or searche…

Large, nearly complete lead cloth seal measuring (without connecting strip) 24 x 26 mm. Disc 2 is broken but mostly complete; it is stamped with a design of two rampant ?lions with their tongues and feet touching, perhaps combatant, with initials (TH?) beneath. All is contained within a beaded border. Disc 1 is apparently unstamped. Although the design looks heraldic, denoting perhaps an official seal, the initials may point instead to a privy seal of a clothier, weaver or searcher. Probably 16th or 17th century.

Complete cloth seal, 18 mm in diameter. Disc 2 is stamped with the facing figure of an angel wearing a dress with elbow-length sleeves and a two-tier pleated skirt, holding an object in either hand. The head and wings are almost invisible. There are hints of a beaded border but no inscription around. Disc 1 is stamped with an incuse R and a possible T or I on its side; these are both at the very edge of the disc. The seal is in good condition. The angel device is usually found cast onto an inner disc of a four-part London alnage (cloth tax) seal, with the shield of the City of Lon…

Complete lead cloth seal, 23-24 mm in diameter. Disc 2 is stamped with a portcullis with four vertical bars ending in points, and three horizontal bars; there is a crown above and a chain to either side. The inscription around is indecipherable. Disc 1 apparently has no stamp. A county alnage (cloth tax) seal, but the name of the county can no longer be read.

Lead cloth seal from Haarlem, Netherlands. Only Disc 1 (with rivet) survives; it is stamped with the arms of Haarlem (a cross above a sword, with two stars to either side) on an ornately shaped shield, with the remains of a legend reading HA[ERL]EM[S. GOET] (Haarlem goods) around. This face has been treated to darken it. The rivet face is untreated; it has the remains of a large figure 20, referring to the length of the cloth in Dutch ells. There is a good parallel, but with 19 1/2 on Disc 2, in Egan 1994 (no. 321). This seal would have been attached to a fine linen, known in Engl…

Lead cloth seal, complete but with hard-to-read stamps. Disc 1 (the complete disc) has no surviving stamp; Disc 2 (with hole for rivet) has a poorly surviving stamp with a portcullis in the centre, an unreadable legend around the outside, The portcullis appears to have four vertical bars and four horizontal bars. There may possibly be the digit I to the left of the portcullis, representing the amount of tax to be paid. Post-medieval, 16th or 17th century.
