An incomplete polished stone axehead of Neolithic date. It is oval in shape, bifacially polished and narrows slightly towards the butt end. This is probably a fragment from the cutting end of a larger stone implement, the original butt end now missing due to old breaks. The cutting edges themselves are slightly chipped in places, perhaps deliberately although equally the result of post-depositional damage. They are relatively blunt and abraded, as are the faces of the axe, probably partly as a result of post-depositional wear and damage. At the butt end of the fragment are a series of…

Perforated pebble-hammer. Irregularly oval or sub-triangular in shape, relatively flat and small, with a drilled central perforation. Each edge is convex; there are two chips off the straightest and longest edge, but otherwise the object is complete. The stone is fine-grained with a smooth hard surface, and pale/medium brown. The perforation is relatively straight, and this suggests a Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date rather than Mesolithic. The function as a 'pebble-hammer' seems at first sight unlikely, in view of the small size and thinness, and the narrowness of its 10 mm dia…

A complete polished stone axe of Neolithic date. It is oval in form and pointed oval in section and formed from a finely grained stone that grey/green in colour in the breaks, with stained brown surfaces that have some post-depositional damage evident in iron staining and several transverse and vertical scratches. The object has a crescentic blade end with chips at one end and close to the centre, as well as multiple striations on the cutting edges that indicate probable use-wear and possible re-sharpening. It has good all-over polish, with slight facetting to both edges as well as th…

A small but complete polished stone axehead of Neolithic date. It is formed from a basic igneous rock that is a very dark almost black colour with occasional pale brown inclusions, probably an olivine with diorites. The axe is roughly triangular in form, oval sectioned with a pointed butt and crescentic cutting edge. It measures 102.82mm in length, 53.87mm in width, 31.96mm in thickness and 229.61g in weight. This is a polished stone axehead of Neolithic date, c.4000-2550 BC.

A complete polished stone axe of Neolithic date, pointed oval section. The axe is formed from a finely grained stone that is green/brown in colour with some evidence of post-depositional damage in the form of iron staining on both faces. It is oval in form and section with sharp, crescentic cutting edge that shows little sign of use-wear or retouch. It has good all-over polish with a slightly flattened butt end and two small areas of damage or flake removal, but is otherwise undamaged. The entire object measures 123.53mm in length, 56.01mm in width, 28.02mm in thickness and 267.51g in…
