A worn and incomplete silver Iron Age unit of the East Anglian Region / Iceni, c.50 BC - AD 10, probably 'Bury Diadem' type. Obverse type is illegible due to the preservation of the coin. Reverse: A horse prancing left, double upper front legs and rear right leg, pellet in ring below (and above tail?). Cf. ABC p. 82, no. 1495; BMC 3524-3527; Talbot Bury type A. The coin appears to have very base silver, possibly a plated copy.

A complete copper-alloy brooch of La Tene III or Nauheim derivative type dating to the Late Iron Age or Early Roman period, c. 50 BC-50 AD. The brooch demonstrates an integral four-coiled bifurcated spring that loops under itself before plunging to form a circular-sectioned tapering pin, which survives complete except for its very tip. Projecting from the front of the spring, the bow (which itself is broadly lenticular in plan view and relatively straight in profile) tapers to its foot before expanding outwards from its reverse side to form a rectangular rearward-facing catchplate wit…

A complete copper-alloy Roman Langton Down brooch of Nertomarus type, c.25-65 AD. The spring casing is cylindrical in form and holds in place a spring and copper-alloy pin that tapers to a sharp point, partially bent due to post-depositional damage. The casing itself has decoration comprising double vertical grooves at each end and along its upper edge. Where the bow and spring casing meet there is moulded decoration consisting of a central triangle with three circular indentations, either side of which are scroll-shaped motifs, all of which seem to extend from the bow. The bow is rec…

An incomplete copper-alloy Birdlip brooch of Late Iron Age to Roman date. It is missing parts of the head, spring, pin, and catchplate due to old breaks. The head is semi-circular in form, missing its outer edges due to old breaks, and with extensive corrosion on its back face indicative of the now missing spring coil and pin. On its front face the head has moulded decoration comprising two central oval shaped mouldings, with single oval shaped transverse mouldings at the base of the head, and perhaps traces of a moulded collar or border, but this is uncertain due to the preservation …

An incomplete copper-alloy centre-looped cosmetic mortar of late Iron Age to Roman date. It has a crescent shaped bow, missing one half/end due to old breaks, that is V-shaped in section and expands at its back towards the centre. At the centre are the remains of an incomplete but integrally cast suspension loop of uncertain form, while at the surviving terminal end there is an incomplete globular projection perhaps intended to be stylised and zoomorphic in nature. The central groove is U-shaped in form and measures approximately 3.5mm in maximum depth. The entire object has a dark gr…

Object type: TOGGLE
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Suffolk

A complete copper alloy late Iron Age/early Roman toggle. It is almost cylindrical in form, although very slightly flattened. There is a groove c.2.5mm behind each end creating narrow disc-like terminals and a wide oval shaped hole through the middle section. There is a trace of iron corrosion to one side of this hole. The surface of the metal is very corroded and has a dark brown patina. Looped toggles appear to have been an antecedent of button and loop fasteners and were probably used both to fasten clothing and on harnesses. This example is reminiscent of numerous other toggles…
