Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A copper-alloy possible cosmetic pestle. It is crescent shaped, measuring 41.9mm in length, 5.6mm in width and 5.6mm in thickness. It has an oval cross-section. One half of this pestle is narrower, probably due to wear and both terminals taper to a flat point. The crescent shape and size of this object make it most likely to be a cosmetic pestle, despite the lack of loop or decoration of any kind. Cosmetic sets are unique to Britain in the late Iron Age and Roman period and are believed to have been used to grind small quantities of powder or cosmetics.
