Cast copper alloy toggle or looped fastener; transverse section in the form of a pair of centrally waisted cylinders with flat-ended terminals separated by a central groove; the arms of a small curved loop with a circular perforation extend from a point either side of the central groove; traces of an engraved concentric groove survive on the inner edges of both cylinders; stress tear in metal beneath loop on one side; surface of metal obscured in places by iron corrosion especially at one of the flat ends which also displays a circular raised area of metal; testing with a magnet revea…

A copper-alloy toggle, 27mm in lenght. Each end is circular, and 13mm in diameter, and is decorated around the circumference with two grooves, 3mm apart. Each end then narrows to a waist, of 6mm in width, and inbetween is a swollen middle, measuring 11mm in diameter, with an integral loop. The side of the swollen middle inside the loop is hollowed out to form a large circular depression, in the centre of the base of this depression there is a small circular hole. There is some corrosion, especially at the ends of the toggle. This toggle is similar to a Late Lron Age La Tene type toggle…

A solid copper-alloy toggle, 25mm in lenght. Each end is circular, 10mm in diameter and narrows to a waist, circular in cross-section with a diameter of 8mm. Inbetween is a swollen middle 12mm in length with a circular-cross section measuring 10mm in diameter it has a transverse groove around its centre. The worn remains of a central vertical projection from the swollen middle are present, this projection is 6mm in length and 7mm in width. On either side, up the centre of it, the transverse groove as on the swollen middle continues. This toggle is likely to be late Iron Age in date, an…

Copper-alloy toggle. Each end is sub-circular, one 11 mm and one 10 mm in diameter. Each end then narrows to a waist, and then swells out again to a long central lobe. This is nearly circular in section, but flattened on four sides to give a slightly squared shape measuring 10 x 12 mm. An oval hole runs through the central lobe on the shorter axis, tapering from both ends towards the centre. Pale green patina with some of the surface lost to corrosion. Late Iron Age, 1st century BC or AD. Length 23 mm.

Each end then narrows to a waist, 8mm in width, and in between is a swollen middle. The swollen middle measures 14mm in length and 12.5mm in width it is roughly circular in cross-section and has a central deep groove around it apart from the upper face. The upper face has a roughly rectangular hole, 10mm in length, 6mm in width and 6mm in depth. The hole is rounded inside with a central transverse rid…

A complete copper alloy probable late Iron Age/early Roman looped toggle. It is cylindrical in shape with flat ends and three deep grooves running c.90% of the way around it, filled with iron corrosion in places. In the section where the grooves do not reach, a square loop extends outwards. The cylinder has a narrow circular hole apparently extending all the way through it, although one end is filled with iron corrosion. All surfaces are heavily corroded. Looped toggles appear to have been an antecedent of button and loop fasteners and were probably used both to fasten clothing and…

A complete copper alloy late Iron Age/early Roman toggle. It is almost cylindrical in form, although very slightly flattened. There is a groove c.2.5mm behind each end creating narrow disc-like terminals and a wide oval shaped hole through the middle section. There is a trace of iron corrosion to one side of this hole. The surface of the metal is very corroded and has a dark brown patina. Looped toggles appear to have been an antecedent of button and loop fasteners and were probably used both to fasten clothing and on harnesses. This example is reminiscent of numerous other toggles…
