Copper alloy strap-fitting; consists of an openwork plate formed from 4 conjoined rings in a square arrangement; each ring is plain and of circular section; the reverse retains two stubs from a strap-loop or slide of D-shaped section; unfortunately the surface of the metal has been stripped of its patina by chemical cleaning.

Copper alloy fragment with a relief human head possibly forming part of a larger openwork object strap-union junction. The back is flat. The outline of the head, (13x9mm) tapers from the hairline to the chin and it is fairly smoothly curved in profile. The hair is shown by incised lines: two lines, perhaps with transverse notching, form a centre parting with a group of five parallel lines each side, angled from forehead to centre line. The front hairline is slightly raised from the face. The eyes are a strong punched dot in ring (1.5mm diam), with a light arc for the eyebrow. The mouth …

A very unusual complete copper-alloy strap fitting. It is similar to Wilds' button and loop fasteners class V, which are cast bronze with a circular disc head and a shank/loop which projects from the head at an angle of 90 degrees so as to lie roughly parallel to the head but it remains slightly offset (Wild 1970 137-155). In this example however, there are several unusual elements which do not allow this object to be classified as a strap fitting of the button and loop fastener type. The head is circular and measures 12.36mm in diameter, it has a small cast circular inset (3.82mm in …

A cast copper-alloy object, 18.0mm in total length and 15mm in width at its widest point. This object consists of a roughly heart shaped plate, 12mm in length, with a rounded front face and a flat back face. There are two parallel drilled circular holes through either half of the heart, each measuring c1.5mm in diameter. In the centre of the heart there is a deep circular groove. Below the heart shaped plate there is a central integral hook-like projection. This is rectangular in shape measuring 5mm in width and 6mm in length it projects straight down from the centre of the lower …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy possible strap fitting or fastening. Consisting of a circular hoop measuring 41.3mm in external diameter and 24.1mm in internal diameter. It has a roughly circular cross-section. There is a roughly rectangular shaped scar, where there was presumably originally a projection. Opposite the scar the hoop narrows and its outer edge has a rectangular indentation. Similar circular hoops which are complete with circular studs fixed to one side via a neck, which projects at c90 degrees from the hoop are known from Suffolk, from Shimpling (see SF-1000…

A copper-alloy strap union possibly of late Iron Age or Roman date. This object consists of three circular rings arranged in a traingular shape. It measures 45.5mm in width and c42mm in height in entirety. Each ring measures c23mm in external diameter and c15mm in internal diameter. The rings have lozenge shaped cross-sections. There is wear on the outer edges of each ring consistent with it being used as a strap union. Where the three rings join there are rectangular mouldings and there is an open triangular hole in the middle of the union. Although no late Iron Age or Roman ex…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy strap fitting or fastener of Iron Age date. It consists of half of a circular hoop that is circular in section, the other half missing due to old breaks. At one side of the hoop is preserved the remains of a flat disc-shaped stud attached to the hoop by a short concave sided neck. The stud itself is incomplete with approximately half of it missing due to old breaks. On the front face it has the remains of recessed panels for enamelled decoration that would have taken the form of two opposing pelta shaped motifs with opposing circular motifs between them…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy strap fitting or strap union junction of probable later Iron Age to early Roman date. It is formed from three loops joined at a central boss decorated with a stylised human head in relief. The central boss is oval shaped in form with a hollow/concave back face. The depicted head has eyes formed from circular indentations and separated by a worn but slightly raised and straight nose. Above is a transverse brow/fringe with hair on the top of the head suggested through several incised grooves running back to front. A simple mouth formed rom a transverse gr…

A cast copper-alloy strap union of later Iron Age date. It has an openwork plate that is figure-of-eight in form with opposing petal or trumpet shaped motifs at the centre. Each of the central motifs has a circular body with raised border that extends at the centre of the figure-of-eight to a semi-circular terminal or lobe with raised border on the outer edge only. This results in one semi-circular terminal pointing directly upwards and one directly downwards. At the centre of each motif is a circular recessed field with separately cast cylindrical rivet that pierced the plate, presum…
