A cast copper-alloy pyramid mount of Early Anglo-Saxon date. It is pyramidal in form with hollow reverse and flattened top. Each of the four faces of the pyramid and the flattened top have the remains of inlaid white-metal decoration, probably niello. At the top this comprises a simple saltire cross. Each of the four faces has an outer border, with opposing faces bearing the same motif. One opposing pair has central circles with four radiating arms; the other pair have stepped lines that divide the face into three. These decorative elements are presumably intended to imitate inlaid ga…

Description: An unusual complete silver buckle with Trewhiddle-style decoration made from five different components all of which appear to be made from the same metal. It has an elongated D-shaped frame, with a sub-rectangular cross-section decorated with four bands of short transverse grooves on the upper face; there is also a grooved pin rest in the centre of the outer edge. The terminals of the frame are flattened ovals with circular holes through them, through which a silver cylindrical bar runs. Description: Circular object made from gilded silver. It consists of a thick, almost-circular disc, with both faces deeply recessed. The front has chip-carved relief decoration of a cross, with each arm made up of a clockwise-turning spiral. There originally appears to have been a small raised three-sided pyramid between each terminal, but only one of these now survives as the others have been largely destroyed by the punching of neat circular holes through them. The three holes thus formed are all about 2mm in diameter, and they have raised edges to both front and reverse. They cut t…

The fragment tapers from the broken edge to a rounded point. The upper incomplete edge has the lower part of what appears to be an openwork design, consisting of two symmetrical V-shaped notches with part of a central small rounded hole, resembling a rivet hole, between. The breaks appear worn. Below is an unusually elaborate animal-head terminal with engraved decoration leaving the features in relief. The usual oval ears with central inver…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy object, perhaps the eraser from an early-medieval stylus. The surviving fragment is triangular, flattening as it flares with straight edges towards the widest edge, which is incomplete due to old breaks. At the narrower end is a raised collar giving the object an oval cross-section, raised on both front and reverse. Above this, the object terminates in old breaks. It has a dark green/brown patina that is worn in places, has some pitting and evidence of post-depositional corrosion. The entire fragment measures 27.17mm in length, 29.35mm in width, 6.86…
