Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Copper-alloy buckle consisting of a plain D-shaped loop and a sub-rectangular sheet-metal plate folded around the loop and secured by a pair of copper-alloy rivets, rectangular slot for pin. Helen Geake writes: This is a small buckle of the kind which is occasionally found in fifth- or sixth-century graves, but which is very much more common in seventh- or early eighth-century graves. The style then appears to go out of use, although this may be due more to the fact that buckles were no longer being deposited in furnished graves than to them no longer being used.
