A hoard of Bronze Age copper-alloy metalwork comprising six Middle Bronze Age palstaves. The palstaves were found whilst metal detecting and appear to have been deposited in pairs within a small hole, with each pair positioned so that the blade end of the top axe met the butt end of the lower. All of the palstaves were removed from the ground by the finders and show signs of active copper-alloy corrosion. 1) (SF1001) Complete unlooped palstave with shield pattern decoration below the stop ridge. The casting seams have been polished out and the sides have vertical ridges level with t…

A hoard of nine cast copper-alloy Middle Bronze Age metalwork probably dating to the Acton Park phase, c.1500-1300 BC. They were discovered by the finder whilst metal detecting in proximity to a previous group of Middle Bronze Age objects (WSS 020) and were recovered by archaeological excavation on the 20th January 2011 by Andrew Brown (PAS/SCCAS) and Andy Beverton (SCCAS). Excavation demonstrated that the objects were deposited in a small oval shaped pit cut into the natural clay to a depth of approximately 10cm, the upper levels of the deposit possibly disturbed by tree root activit…

Description: A probable plough-dispersed late Bronze Age hoard found in a c 30m radius over a period of some time. 1: A small complete socketed bronze axe head, pale to medium green in colour. This axe head has double socket mouldings but is otherwise plain. There is a small hole, most likely to be a casting flaw, adjoining the loop. The blade edge has some damage and is relatively worn and rather blunt. There are a few use or sharpening marks visible on both faces and these are mostly affected by minor pocking from invasive corrosion. 81mm in length, 47mm in width and 160g in weight …

A late Bronze Age hoard consisting of six objects including: 1 copper alloy socketed axe and 5 gold lock-rings (which were located within the hollow of the axe, three of the lock-rings were excavated from the body of the axe by the British Museum conservation department), were found while metal detecting with landowners permission at a depth of 8-9 inches. It is to be known as the "Near North Cove" hoard. Description 1. Copper alloy socketed axe, Class B- Southern English ribbed type. The socket mouth is rounded and the axe has a double mouth moulding, the higher of which is more pr…

Description: Two definite and one probable fragment of late Bronze Age plate scrap, from the same find spot as a previous hoard of plate scrap (WNN 013) found by the same finder in December 2000. 1: An irregular broken fragment of thin cast plate with a central longitudinal rib on both faces. The surface is uneven, the fragment slightly bent and all the edges incomplete due to old breaks, now worn. It is dark green in patination. Dimensions: 32mm in length, 30mm in width and 2mm in thickness, 8g in weight. 2: An irregular broken fragment of thin cast p…

58 prehistoric bronze metalwork fragments were found whilst metal-detecting on arable land in May 2006. Description 1. Sword fragment. Slightly convex mid rib defined by a groove on either side. The blade edge is corrosion damaged, slightly pocked and has a medium green patina. L: 21.0mm; W. 30.0mm; Th. 7.5mm; Wt: 17.0g. 2. Sword/Sickle fragment. Broad convex mid rib with concave sides. One side is straight whilst the one is slightly bent potentially implying a sickle form. However, the blade edges and one face are heavily corrosion damaged so this could be a consequ…

Description: A small late Bronze Age hoard consisting of a bronze spearhead, two joining short sword blade fragments and a possible chisel terminal fragment. 1: A pegged bronze spearhead, almost complete with the end of the tip missing and part of the socket mouth missing, the tip break appears ancient but the socket break seems more recent as there is a fresh scar along its edge. Next to this fresher break there is a worn rounded edge which may be due to an original casting flaw. Other damage along the blade edges, in the form of at least four dents causing burring on the blade fac…

Description: A small hoard of alloy Late Bronze Age metalwork, consisting of three incomplete and fragmentary socketed axes and five fragments of metalworking debris. One axe survives in better condition than the others, complete but for a missing section of the socket. The remaining portion of the socket is rectangular in cross-section and there is a raised rim around its outer end. Further moulding may be visible on each face behind this rim, but this is obscured by damage and corrosion. Extending along one side behind the socket rim is a low, integral, semi-circular loop. The…

A dispersed Late Bronze Age hoard recovered initially through metal detecting on 24th March 2012, followed by a small scale excavation on the 27th March 2012 by Andrew Brown (Suffolk FLO) and Mark Sommers (SCCAS). Metal detecting on the 24th of March produced a total of nine objects including the remains of seven socketed axes, one gouge and a fragment of copper-alloy ingot all dating to the Late Bronze Age. Excavation on the 27th centred on the immediate area of the metal detected finds where there was the suggestion of a concentration of material in addition to objects still i…
