Object type: FLANGED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE

An incomplete copper alloy early Bronze Age flanged axe. The outer part of the butt is missing. It has strongly concave sides with a flaring, outwards curving blade. A low flange runs down either side, disappearing towards the blade. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded and the breaks are well worn.
This example probably belongs to the Willerby or Arreton metalworking phases, which equates to Needham's (2017, fig.16) Period 3 or Period 4 - c.1900 BC -c.1500 BC

Description:
A small hoard of alloy Late Bronze Age metalwork, consisting of three incomplete and fragmentary socketed axes and five fragments of metalworking debris.
One axe survives in better condition than the others, complete but for a missing section of the socket. The remaining portion of the socket is rectangular in cross-section and there is a raised rim around its outer end. Further moulding may be visible on each face behind this rim, but this is obscured by damage and corrosion. Extending along one side behind the socket rim is a low, integral, semi-circular loop. The…

Object type: AWL
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
A complete copper alloy awl, probably of late Bronze Age date. The shaft is sub-rectangular in section and tapers towards either end. One end is pointed, whilst the other is chisel shaped. It survives in poor condition with a corroded surface.
It is difficult to date Bronze Age awls precisely. Ben Roberts (pers. comm.) suggests that they are likely to date to later in the period. The form changes little throughout time, however, and much later examples are also known. Many similar examples have been recorded on the PAS database, including SWYOR-220A7C from Yorkshire, HAMP-D070D5 fr…

An incomplete and small copper-alloy blade of Bronze Age date, probably a knife. Part of the butt end and the blade survive, the tip of both ends missing due to old breaks. The butt end is rectangular in form, oval sectioned and has the remains of two circular rivet holes at the incomplete end. On each side it has two semi-circular notches. The blade is short, triangular in form, oval sectioned and tapers towards a now missing tip. All surfaces have a worn and pitted dark brown patina that shows signs of corrosion in places. Object type: CHISEL
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
A complete cast copper-alloy socketed chisel of Late Bronze Age date and probable Ewart Park metalworking phase attribution c. 900-750 BC. In form it is very similar in appearance to socketed axes, though the small size of this object heavily infers that function as a chisel is far more likely. The socket mouth is widened and circular in plan, tapering slightly to the midpoint of the object before expanding outwards again towards the flared working end of the object. Preserved in good condition with an even greyish-coloured metal and encrustations covering some portions of the object,…
