Object type: MOULD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk

A cast copper-alloy single valve from a two-piece Late Bronze Age socketed axe mould. Signs of corrosion are visible on the interior and exterior surfaces, and where visible through the dark green patina the metal beneath has a very silvery appearance perhaps indicative of a high tin or lead content in the alloy. The valve is in the form of a socketed axe, D-shaped in section with concave interior surface forming the mould. It is undecorated on its outer surface, although the remains of two small integral and cylindrical knops are visible towards the blade end of the mould, the rema…

Five objects which are possibly part of a Late Bronze Age hoard. 1: A roughly wedge-shaped copper-alloy fragment of metal working waste with irregular but relatively angular faces. At least two of the edges appear snapped though all faces are heavily patinated dark greenish-brown. Dimensions; 37.8mm x 31mm x 12.5mm and 41g in weight. 2: A fragment of a copper-alloy socket with short stub of a loop surviving. A moulding seam is visible above and below the loop stub. The relatively small oval mouth diameter suggests that this is probably from a socketed chisel or mortising tool though i…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete and worn cast copper-alloy flat, tanged chisel or leather working knife of Bronze Age date. Only the blade end and a small section of the tang survive, the remainder now missing due to old breaks. The tang is solid, oval sectioned and expands to a flattened blade end. This is triangular in form and profile, with a crescentic blade that extends further to one side than the other giving it an asymmetrical appearance. The surfaces have the remains of a worn and pitted dark brown patina. It measures 23.52mm in length, 18.44mm in width, 5.12mm in thickness and 4.75g in weight…

A complete cast copper-alloy socketed axehead of Late Bronze Age date. It is rectangular in form, triangular in profile and with a hollow socket that is oval shaped at the mouth and extends almost to the cutting edge of the blade. Two vertial ridges are visible on opposing sides of the interior of the socket. The mouth of the socket has moulded double transverse ribs, the upper of the two being more prominent. Each side of the outer edge has a vertical casting seam, with a small and integrally cast D-shaped side loop visible just below the moulded ribs on one side of the axe. The blad…

Object type: BARBED AND TANGED ARROWHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A worked flint arrowhead of Bronze Age date. It is of barb and tang form, struck from a dark brown/grey flint. The arrowhead is triangular in form and pointed oval shaped section. It has one rectangular barb and a larger rectangular tang, the second barb appears to have been broken in antiquity with the side of the arrowhead being extensively retouched. This reworking of the object is of as high quality as the remainder of the object and it is plausible that the second barb broke or was damaged during the initial production of the object, being retouched to produce a single barbed arr…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete cast copper-alloy socketed axehead of Late Bronze Age date. The blade and part of the socket survive intact, the mouth end of the socket now missing due to old breaks. It is triangular in profile, rectangular in form with a crescentic blade that expands beyond the sides of the axe. The cutting edge is very worn and uneven with extensive damage seemingly the result of usage. Where the axe terminates in old breaks the oval shaped socket is visible and on both faces of the axe there are tool marks indicating that it was deliberately broken in antiquity, probably for the re-…

A dispersed Late Bronze Age hoard recovered initially through metal detecting on 24th March 2012, followed by a small scale excavation on the 27th March 2012 by Andrew Brown (Suffolk FLO) and Mark Sommers (SCCAS). Metal detecting on the 24th of March produced a total of nine objects including the remains of seven socketed axes, one gouge and a fragment of copper-alloy ingot all dating to the Late Bronze Age. Excavation on the 27th centred on the immediate area of the metal detected finds where there was the suggestion of a concentration of material in addition to objects still i…
