A gold object, probably a bead, of possible Bronze Age date. It has been flattened due to post-depositional damage but otherwise appears intact. The object is rectangular in form and would originally have been tubular in form. It is decorated on its exterior surface be a series of 17 transverse incised grooves, seemingly incised individually and by hand with the result that they are slightly unevenly spaced and the ends of some of the grooves do not quite meet. There is some damage to the exterior surface in the form of small cracks and splits to the metalwork resultant from it being …

A hoard of nine cast copper-alloy Middle Bronze Age metalwork probably dating to the Acton Park phase, c.1500-1300 BC. They were discovered by the finder whilst metal detecting in proximity to a previous group of Middle Bronze Age objects (WSS 020) and were recovered by archaeological excavation on the 20th January 2011 by Andrew Brown (PAS/SCCAS) and Andy Beverton (SCCAS). Excavation demonstrated that the objects were deposited in a small oval shaped pit cut into the natural clay to a depth of approximately 10cm, the upper levels of the deposit possibly disturbed by tree root activit…

A hoard of Bronze Age copper-alloy metalwork comprising six Middle Bronze Age palstaves. The palstaves were found whilst metal detecting and appear to have been deposited in pairs within a small hole, with each pair positioned so that the blade end of the top axe met the butt end of the lower. All of the palstaves were removed from the ground by the finders and show signs of active copper-alloy corrosion. 1) (SF1001) Complete unlooped palstave with shield pattern decoration below the stop ridge. The casting seams have been polished out and the sides have vertical ridges level with t…

Description: A probable plough-dispersed late Bronze Age hoard found in a c 30m radius over a period of some time. 1: A small complete socketed bronze axe head, pale to medium green in colour. This axe head has double socket mouldings but is otherwise plain. There is a small hole, most likely to be a casting flaw, adjoining the loop. The blade edge has some damage and is relatively worn and rather blunt. There are a few use or sharpening marks visible on both faces and these are mostly affected by minor pocking from invasive corrosion. 81mm in length, 47mm in width and 160g in weight …

A complete small copper alloy quoit-headed pin of Middle Bronze Age date. It is undecorated and in a very good state of preservation, with traces of the original copper alloy colour still visible in places, but otherwise with a dark brown patina. The flat loop of the head has slightly rounded edges and is circular with a central sub-circular, or tear-drop shaped, perforation. The faces of the head and the upper areas of the stem demonstrate evidence of diagonal abrasions, possibly cleaning marks. One face of the loop has clear stepped cast edges on both the inner and outer edges as a r…
