Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete Mesolithic flint tranchet axehead dating to circa 10000-4000 BC. It is broadly rectangular in plan and profile. The long edges are roughly parallel with the blade. The dorsal face has a central ridge or spine running longitudinally from the butt to the to the tranchet flake. Coarse flaking covers both sides of the axehead. The blade has been formed by the removal of a final flake transversely across the dorsal face known as a tranchet flake. Partial cortex remains at the butt end.
