An incomplete cast copper alloy steelyard (scale with beam arms of unequal length), of Roman dating (1st to 2nd Century AD).
The steelyard consists of a round sectioned arm with notched calibrations, 5 mm apart on one side and 13 mm apart on the other side. At one end the rod widens to a flat spatulate shape. This has a 3.7 mm diameter hole at the rounded end and two similarly sized, but distorted loops, offset on either side. The side loops correspond with the two sets of calibration notches. An incomplete sheet tin alloy 'scutiform' / disc pendant, of Early Early Medieval dating (AD 500 to AD 600).
The pendant is sub circular in plan, with a rectangular extension to the top. This rectangular extension would have originally formed part of the suspension loop and is incomplete. The front of the pendant exhibits a central raised circular boss. This boss is surrounded by three concentric circles of silvered V-shape stamps. The reverse is plain and undecorated. Traces of white solder are present at the top, next to the incomplete suspension loop.
