Fragment of a lave stone quern of Roman to medieval date (c. AD 43 - 1300). Old breaks on all edges. The grinding surface has a series of radiating grooves engraved across the surface. Uncertain original diameter. This form of lava quern was imported into Britain, probably from Germany, from the Roman period to around the 13th century. They were commonly transported as ballast in unfinished form. It is, therefore, difficult to narrow down a date range.
