Object type: PURSE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper-alloy purse frame of late medieval to post-medieval date. It consists of a strip of metal folded longitudinally along its centre to create a u-shape in cross-section culminating in a the remains of a right-angle terminal at one end and a worn break at the other. There are three small circular holes through one edge slightly further along. These would have held the fabric of the purse in place originally. The metal is heavily corroded with much of the original surface missing, obscuring any potential decoration. The object is also bent at its central poi…

Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy Medieval harness pendant. It is very worn and corroded, with decayed enamel remaining. The pendant is shield shaped with the remains of blue enamel visible. The suspension loop is incomplete. The design is not clear, but it appears to be a lion. Pendants with enamelled decoration, usually heraldic, seem to be most common in the late 13th and first half of the 14th century, c. 1280-1350 (Griffiths 1986, 1; Ashley 2002, 29-30; Baker 2015, 6). They can be a variety of shapes, but shield-shaped (with straight top and sides curving to a point) and l…

Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete Early Medieval copper-alloy hooked tag dating to circa AD 750-1065. Broadly circular in plan, it is comprised of a single thin sheet and is worn and corroded. Extending from the bottom is the stub of the hook, which tapers into a point curling back on itself.  Two parallel circular sewing holes are located at the top. Both faces are undecorated.  The form is consistent with Lewis and Naylor's A1.x in that it is broadly circular and undecorated (2013). Thomas notes that the sub-circular form was a later 8th century&nbs…

Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy harness pendant of Medieval date. It is missing the top of the suspension loop due to old breaks and has extremely worn surfaces due to post-depositional corrosion and damage. The pendant is flat and circular in form, with an integral suspension loop at the top set at right angles to the front face and now mostly incomplete due to old breaks. The back face is flat and undecorated, however the front face has extensive decoration that in many respects resembles a seal matrix rather than a harness pendant. At the centre of the face is an embossed shield wit…

A probable nummus, from the House of Constantine [AD 313 - 364]. The reverse is very worn, but it is possibly a GLORIA EXERCITVS reverse type of a soldier with one standard, which would give a date range of AD 335-341, and a Reece period of 17. The Mint type is unclear. Dimensions: Diameter, 15mm. Thickness (average), 1.1mm. Weight: 1.34g.
