An almost entirely complete cast copper-alloy Middle Saxon strap end dating to the Early Medieval period, c. 750-900. This example is of Thomas' class A1axiv, 'Split-end strap-ends of convex form with zoomorphic terminals decorated with a single field of Trewhiddle style adornment, depicting two interlaced animals'. The strap end survives virtually complete with the exception of the rivets and one corner of its backplate, both missing in old damage. The strap end is broadly sub-triangular in plan, demonstrating curved sides that taper along their length towards a zoomorphic terminal wh…

A complete but distorted coppper-alloy composite strap end dating to the Medieval period, c. 1250-1400. It is rectangular in plan although bent at an angle of about 45 degrees c. 2/3 of the way up its total length as a result of old damage. Tapering slightly along its length towards a projecting tri-lobed terminal, the two plates which make up both sides of the object are attached at their upper edge by a single circular-sectioned copper-alloy rivet and just above the terminal by a second. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy possibly Roman strap end, dating to AD 43-410. It consists of a triangular cross-sectioned frame, which has an openwork decoration defining a lower drop-shaped loop, which has its pointed part extending sideways and creating two symmetrical circular loops. The lower outer edge of the drop-shaped loop has a slightly recessed section, which seems worn and might have had a metal roll wrapped around or a further metal pendant. The top edge of the symmetrical circular loops have two D-shaped lugs set at right angle to the plane of the frame, which are pierced with…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy composite strap end dating to the Medieval period, c. 1250-1400. The strap end consists three elements, attached together by two circular-sectioned copper-alloy rivets (one at the upper edge of the strap end, one just above the terminal): the two outer elements are a pair of sheet-metal plates, rectangular in form but tapering towards their base. These 'sandwich' an internal forked spacer with a projecting oval terminal knop and transverse collar at its base. The strap end is preserved mostly intact, though the side plates have come away from the upper r…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy composite strap end dating to the Medieval period, c. 1250-1400. Only the lower portion of the strap end survives, its upper section missing in an old break. The strap end is composed of three elements: two outer plates and an internal spacer held together by a circular-sectioned rivet sited in the terminal. In plan the strap end would have originally demonstrated a rectangular body, its tapering sides decoratively notched and waisted at their base prior to a projecting rectangular flattened terminal decorated with deep grooves and a transverse moulding …

An incomplete copper-alloy medieval composite strap end, dating to the period c. AD1260-1450. Only one undecorated, rectangular shaped plate remains, no rivets evident on the surviving part. The plate is slightly bent at the top where it has broken. Ornate terminal at the base of the plate which looks to form a devolved fleur-de-lis shape, however the terminal has snaped partway down its length.
