Object type: RAZOR
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a possible Bronze Age copper-alloy razor dating to circa 1400-800 BC. The extant piece is rectangular in plan with a slightly curved profile. It terminates in old, worn breaks along each edge. At one end is a circular perforation 2.1mm in diameter. Adjacent to the perforation, one face shows evidence for a small, not penetrated, drilled circular hole 1.7mm in diameter.
It has a dark green patina. The patina of the object is consistent with Bronze Age metalwork although the weight is light and might indicate a more Medieval date. The perforation is consistent with s…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy tanged razor of probable Late Bronze Age date and unusual form, c. 1150-800 BC. The razor demonstrates a leaf-shaped lenticular sectioned blade, the sides of which have suffered some minor losses due to post-depositional damage. The bade tapers towards its rear edge, where there are two trunnion-like projections marking the beginnings of the tang, after which the remainder of the handle flattens out before tapering further and bifurcating in what is possibly the base of a terminal loop (though this section of the object is broken away in old damage). Pr…

Object type: RAZOR
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper alloy possible late Bronze Age razor. It is roughly ovoid in shape and plano-convex in cross-section, with a broad, flat mid-rib and a flattened rim around the outside of both faces. The edges are all damaged and chipped, but it survives in fair condition with a bright green smooth patina.
The damage to the edges makes the original form of the object impossible to determine, but it seems likely that it formed part of the blade of a razor. A number of similar more complete examples have been recorded with the PAS from elsewhere in the country, including LEIC-0…

County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy object, probably a razor of Bronze Age date. It is missing the tang due to old breaks, and has post-depositional damage to both blades, but is otherwise complete. It is leaf-shaped (pointed oval) in form, tapering towards the tip, and with a flattened pointed-oval shaped cross section. Both faces of the object have slight mid ribs that run from tang to tip. At the tang end are the remains of a rectangular tang that is now mostly incomplete due to old breaks. Both faces have a dark green patina that is pitted in places and with some copper-alloy corrosion. It…

Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk

A cast copper-alloy Roman razor handle terminal. The terminal is zoomorphic in form, probably depicting a griffin, and at its base has an incomplete split attachment end where the now missing iron blade would originally have been inserted. At the top of the terminal is an elongated and curving neck with a triangular beak that points downwards and small semi-circular projection at the crest of the head. Both faces have incised decoration comprising double transverse grooves towards the base of the neck, punched dots for the eyes, and faintly incised grooves that appear to outline the b…

Object type: RAZOR
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
Incomplete copper-alloy razor. All edges broken, it originally had a broad blade with a curved cutting edge. At the back of the blade (the blunt edge) are one complete and two incomplete sub-square perforations (nearly 4 mm square) below a moulding which runs along the curved blunt edge. In the centre of the moulding a broken circular loop projects; this may be in the approximate centre of the back edge of the razor. Some of the breaks are very fresh but others are older. There are also some very recent scratches or scrapes on one face. Mid to dark green patination. Surviving bl…
