Copper-alloy object the shape of a human head with an integral rivet or attachment stud on the reverse, probably a Roman military belt fitting. It is heavily abraded and has lost most of its original surface. The head is oval when viewed face-on, tapering slightly asymmetrically in the lower half; the upper jawline from the ear to the chin is straight on one side and convex on the other.  It is plano-convex in cross-section; with the exception of the stud it is broadly flat on the reverse.  The eyes survive as two oval or sub-circular areas of the metal that have a slightly …

Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Gilded late 11th- or 12th-century copper-alloy mount, probably from horse-harness. It is basically a short, wide rectangle with geometric decoration consisting of three wide flat-topped transverse (vertical) ridges dividing the mount into four gilded fields. These are decorated with closely spaced shallowly oblique grooves, alternating in direction field by field. Hints of grooves and gilding on the edges of the ridges suggest that both types of decoration carried on over them. The edges and corners of the rectangle are now worn and rounded. It is 28.5mm wide, a maximum of 16mm tall a…

Incomplete 7th- or 8th-century Anglo-Saxon gilded copper alloy mount, now slightly cracked and bent, with an oblique break where the terminal is missing. The broad end is concave and the whole object is flat, just 1mm thick. The front is covered with worn 'chip carved' interlace ornament, approximately symmetrical; it appears to be entirely foliar, and related to that on a disc brooch or mount from Little Snoring, Norfolk (HER 17589) and on a mount from Merton, Norfolk (HER 40117, NMS-2F1687, Gurney 2005, 744, fig.7C).
