Record ID: SF225
Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Copper-alloy object, perhaps a mount. A flat metal plate in the form of a bird with short humped outstretched wings and elaborate tail; the tail has two pairs of outward-curling projections and a lozengiform terminal. Fine oblique and curved lines on the surface indicate feathers. There is no obvious head; the head area terminates in a fragmentary circular loop decorated with a concentric groove. Traces of gilding on the surface. Perhaps intended as a spread eagle, perhaps late medieval.

Fragmentary decorated cruciform plate of copper-alloy; all four arms broken away, very corroded; sides concave with raised outer borders which enclose a central recessed field with geometric decoration highlighted with gilding; at the back is a central stub of a rivet or other attachment feature. Update: it seems likely from the image that has been recovered for this record (see below) that this object is an early Anglo-Saxon horse-harness mount with Style I relief decoration around a low central circular boss. Compare DENO-A99AB3 and DENO-75B237. It dates broadly to the 6th century AD.

Cast gilded copper-alloy mount in the shape of a horned head. The horns project from the top of the head and curve outward and upward; although the ends of the horns are missing, what remains is decorated with a deep V-shaped central groove to produce a chip-carved effect. The face below is sub-triangular and has a double-ridged brow or hairline above oblique lines forming triangular eyes. A straight vertical nose runs down towards a down-turned mouth and possible moustache. A circular hole at the junction of the brows and horns is presumably for attachment. The front of both face and…

Tinned or silvered copper alloy mount; triangular shaped with slightly curving sides; pair of integral attachment studs on reverse; tin or silver wash on front surface. Perhaps from a belt or possibly, as with larger mounts of this shape, from horse harness. Probably 6th or early 7th century AD.

Cast copper alloy mount associated with a belt or some other form of strap used in a military context; thickened bar, D-shaped in section, expands both in width and thickness towards centre, decorated towards flat outer ends with two pairs of concentric mouldings; underside slightly hollowed with two protruding, integrally cast attachment rivets with sub-circular sectioned shafts and flat-topped heads; variant of double-riveted mounts attributed to military use, e.g. Colchester, no. 4238.

Pyramidal mount made of thin copper-alloy sheet, with four triangular faces leading up to a rivet hole in the centre. This retains a 7 mm long copper-alloy rivet with burred-over ends. The mount measures 19 x 17 mm and is 4 mm high. It was probably used on a belt, but other uses (e.g. on a book) cannot be ruled out.

Incomplete mount made from thin flimsy copper-alloy sheet. Sexfoil, it is domed and rises more sharply in the centre; two opposing foils have small circular rivet holes and all the foils are divided from each other by short indentations. Two foils are torn away. It measures 22 mm across the foils with rivet holes. Probably from a belt or other strap.

Circular enamelled copper-alloy disc, possibly a mount from a mazer. 30 mm in diameter, 2 mm thick and slightly convex, some of the edges are worn or broken. There are no rivets or holes. The edge of the object has traces of gilding. The design is of the royal arms of the Stuarts, with a raised rose to one side and a raised thistle to the other, and the raised initials I + R above (with a cross or quatrefoil between the I and the R). The enamelling around the shield is black; the shield has bright blue and red enamel surviving. Compare WILT-BB5F8C, BERK-1EFF99, SOM-A9F568 and LE…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A Roman cast copper-alloy mount of 'bell-shaped stud' type dating to circa AD 43-410. The iron attachment has nearly corroded away, but originally protruded from a short cylinder which then flares out into a wide shallow bell shape. On the 'underside' of the flared area is a narrow groove around a dished area, with a tall narrow cylindrical boss projecting from the centre. The mount is deep enough to get your fingers around, so it may be a functional knob rather than purely decorative.
