Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy lamp hanger of Medieval date. It has been cast in one and measures 43.00mm in height and 24.45mm in width. It consists of a central vertical shaft which terminates in a suspension loop. The base of this shaft flares outwards and is in the centre of three arms, which project at right angles from the central shaft. Each arm is incomplete due to old breaks, the missing terminals probably originally had circular perforations through them from which chains would have hung, to hold the lamp below. There is another circular perforation, through a small central …

An incomplete Medieval copper-alloy lamp hanger dating to circa AD 1300-1450. It has three branching rectangular-sectioned arms. At the end of one arm is a D-shaped terminal containing a central circular aperture. The arms are set perpendicular to the broadly rectangular-sectioned central stem. At the top of the stem is a  suspension loop.On the underside of the stem at the junction of the arms is a D-shaped lug with central, circular aperture. The object is consistent with examples depicted in Egan 1998: pg 131, nos 356-357, described as branched holders for …

An incomplete copper-alloy medieval lamp hanger. It has three arms branching outwards from a central point, each tapering, curving downwards slightly and terminating in a break. In the centre of the upper face a suspension arm projects upwards at a right-angle, terminating in a circular loop. The remains of a further loop projects from the centre of the lower face, its outer part missing. The surface is corroded with bluish patination around the lower loop and the breaks are well worn. Egan (1998, 131, fig.99, nos.356-7) illustrates two similar examples a…

An incomplete Medieval copper-alloy lamp hanger dating to circa AD 1300-1450. It has three branching rectangular-sectioned arms. At the end of one arm is a D-shaped terminal containing a central circular aperture. The other two arms would have followed this design, though are both now incompletet. The arms are set perpendicular to the broadly rectangular-sectioned central stem. At the top of the stem is a suspension loop.On the underside of the stem at the junction of the arms is a D-shaped lug with central, circular aperture. The object is consistent with examples depicted in E…

An incomplete Medieval copper-alloy lamp hanger dating to circa AD 1300-1450. It has three branching rectangular-sectioned arms, each complete with a D-shaped terminal containing a central circular aperture. The arms are set perpendicular to the broadly rectangular-sectioned central stem. At the top ofhte stem is a now incomplete suspension loop, survived now by two stumps. On the underside of the stem at the junction of the arms is a D-shaped lug with central, circular aperture. A complete copper-alloy medieval lamp hanger. It has three branching, slightly downwards curving arms, each culminating in a small circular suspension loop on its lower side. In the centre a smaller suspension spike projects upwards. The surface is somewhat corroded and the breaks are well worn. Egan (1998, 131, fig.99, nos.356-7) illustrates two similar examples and suggests that they were used to suspend ceramic or glass lamps from the ceiling or were even used as censer hangers. Length: 35.00mm, width: 36.97mm, thickness: 22.11mm, weight: 12.14mm

An incomplete copper alloy lamp hanger. An unusually large and robust example. It has two flattened triangular arms branching outwards from a circular central section, each curving downwards slightly - the third is largely missing. Each arm is rectangular in cross-section and has a small semi-circular suspension loop extending from the lower edge of its outer end (one of which is incomplete). There is a raised circular section extending from the middle of the outer face of the central section, which is probably the remains of a suspension loop or similar. To one side of the central se…

An incomplete copper alloy medieval lamp hanger. It has three branching, slightly downwards curving arms. Two of these are almost completely missing, but the third survives complete and culminates in a small circular suspension loop. An incomplete copper alloy lamp hanger. It has three arms branching outwards from the centre, each curving downwards. Each arm is roughly oval in cross-section, tapering towards its outer end and each culminates in a small circular suspension loop. One arm has been bent inwards slightly and part of its loop is missing. A further longer, circular cross-sectioned arm, slightly bent, projects from the centre of the outer face, culminating in a collar followed by a flattened circular suspension loop. A simple loop projects from the centre of the lower face. It survives in good condition w…
