A complete copper-alloy cast hook dating to the Medieval period, possibly c.13th to 15th Century. This is a one piece, circular section rod bent into a forward facing hook. The attachment end is flattened and pierced laterally with a long slot. The hook end projects beyond the slot, although it had been bent and no longer running parallel to the slot. A complete copper alloy hooked fitting of uncertain date. The hook curves in a semi-circle and is circular in cross-section. Extending from the upper end is a flattened attachment strip with two small circular holes through it. It survives in very good condition. This, together with its patination, would seem to suggest a post-medieval or later date. A number of similar objects have been recorded on the PAS database that are identified variously as suspension hooks from early medieval girdles or belts and harness fittings. For example, LIN-A43FAA and LIN-A43FAA from Lincolnshire and W…

An incomplete copper-alloy harbick (or havette/shear-board hook) of late Medieval date. It is missing both ends due to old breaks. The object comprises a central bar or grip that is rectangular in form and section. On the three external faces that would have been visible when the hook was in use there is incised decoration comprising a central cross saltire or X, flanked by two or three vertical grooves. From each end of the central grip extend rectangular arms that are narrower than the grip and begin to taper before terminating in old breaks. These would have originally extended to …

An incomplete copper alloy object, with a head which is cuboid, square in cross-section and faceted, and a stem which is circular in cross-section and bent out of shape. Total length: 14.57mm, width of head: 6.5 x 6.8mm, thickness of stem: 3.09mm, weight: 2.66g. Although this resembles a pin of Cool's (1990, 164) group 15, it is more likely to be a modern hook, perhaps for a coat or strings for a blind, etc. Compare NLM-B5DF46, LVPL-4CF45C, LEIC-B30068, SF-D59BA6. Probably 19th or 20th century.

A complete copper Post-Medieval strap hook. The hook is decorated with moulded relief and openwork and similar examples have been interpreted as the torso of a human female facing-figure (Read 2008, 233). The hook curves behind the figure and expands to form the head which has crude facial features and hair in moulded relief, while the arms form two openwork loops, one to each side of the body. Decoration on the body consists of two swirls on the chest and a sub triangular feature in moulded relief. Below the arms is a pair of openwork loops, and below these is a large loop perhaps fo…
