County: Suffolk

A complete iron hammer, possibly a hand hammer of Roman date. It is rectangular in form with a central oval head that has a central circular aperture retaining some of its encrusted soil. At each end the head tapers to rectangular chisel edges, one of which is pointed the other flattened and perhaps missing its outer edge due to old breaks. All surfaces of the object have red/brown corrosion products, but the object is largely complete. It measures 149.07mm in length, 45.95mm in width (at centre, 21.00mm and 21,26mm at each end), 20.70mm in thickness, and 325g in weight. Similar ir…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy probable late Bronze Age socketed hammer. It is cylindrical in form with flat, circular, slightly expanded base and a damaged socket at the other end. Only the interior of the socket survives. It is light green in colour and heavily corroded with the surface missing in places. Where the surface does survive there is a suggestion that it was originally vertically faceted. Almost all of the surface is missing on the base so no evidence of wear is now visible. Hammers were in use in Britain during the Taunton metalwork phase of the MBA, with slender hammers …

An incomplete and worn cast copper-alloy object, possibly a socketed hammer or similar implement of Bronze Age date. One terminal end survives, the remainder now missing due to old breaks. It is rectangular in form and section, tapering towards a flattened, blunt terminal end. At the old breaks that is a large oval shaped aperture, possibly the base of a socket, or alternatively the result of being mis-cast. All surfaces have a worn and heavily pitted dark brown patina, with corrosion visible in places. It measures 32.04mm in length, 17.53mm in width, 13.23mm in thickness, and 30.29g …

A copper alloy possibly Bronze age socketed hammer head. It is in two parts and is incomplete due to old breaks. The main piece has a solid head, 16mm in thickness, and rectangular in shape, surmounted by an integral loop. This has rounded sides and a flattened head and a central, circular perforation. There is a groove outlining a rectangular area surrounding the loop. The sides to front and back of the hammer head are vertical, and there are sloping shoulders leading down to the socketed terminals to left and right. One terminal shows two sides of the socketed area, suggesting an o…

A bronze fragment from the end of a solid cast object possibly of solid cylindrical form, with one side casting seam visible, its original diameter is estimated as approximately 25mm. It has a dark brown patina with a bronze colour visible over much of the original surfaces, suggesting recent disturbance from anaerobic conditions. The date and function of this object are unknown due to its fragmentary nature however there is a possiblity that it could be the terminal of a Bronze Age hammer of mid-late Bronze Age in date.

An incomplete small bronze socketed hammer, measuring 34mm in surviving length, 13mm in width at socket tip, 12mm in thickness at the socket and 5mm in thickness at the tip. Part of the oval cross-sectioned socket and the hammer end now survive, the rest of the socket is missing due to old breaks now worn. The hammer end is slightly off-square and is formed of two bevalled opposing faces which form a rectangular cross-section. This hammer fragment has a very poor surface condition with extensive invasive corrosion. This is a very small hammer, similar in size to an example from t…

A socketed bronze hammer, complete. Measuring 46mm in length, 25mm in width and 22mm in thickness. The working face is angled/off-square, convex and has markedly rounded edges. The face is relatively smooth and its edges are marked by a range of numerous irregular and differently aligned linear indentations, some of which could be recent agricultural damage, but most of which are probably original. The rest of the body of the hammer has been relatively crudely finished. The socket is sub-rectangular and has a double mouth-moulding on the exterior. Casting seams are quite…
