A coin hoard of 198 Roman silver denarii and 13 fragmentary denarii. 162 denarii and 11 fragments were initially recovered by the finders. A small scale excavation of the hoard findspot conducted by Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service and the Finds Liaison Officer produced a further 7 coins in the immediate vicinity of the hoard, but there was no evidence for further features or potential vessels the hoard might have been buried within. Any features that may have been contemporary with the hoard itself were removed during the initial excavation of the hoard prior to PAS/SCC …

All of the Iron Age coins belong to the East Anglian (Icenian) tradition. The coins are similar in date range and type to the earlier finds from the site. They were found in four separate groups and can be summarised as follow…

All of the coins are silver and all but one are official silver coins of the kings of England from Edward I to Henry VI and will thus we of the traditional sterling standard, and therefore a little over 90% fine metal. The exception is a silver sterling of English type issued by a local ruler in north-western France. There are four denominations present in the group, the groat of four-pence, the half-groat, the penny and (in small numbers) the halfpenny. The only missing silver denomination of late medieval Engl…

A small hoard or purse spill of four silver pennies of Aethelred II, king of all England (978-1016 AD). All of the coins belong to his Long Cross issue (as North, 1980: no. 774) and date to c.997-1003 AD. Three of the coins (nos. 2-4) have bent flans, one of which (no. 3) is bent to an angle of 90 degrees and has damage to one side of the flan. This aside, the coins are relatively well preserved and well struck. The coins were found during two separate days of metal detecting and within a relatively small area of arable land and have a combined total weight of 5.65g. 1) Obverse: +AE…

Roman coin hoard: Nine 3rd-4th century coins fused together. The coins have been burnt, with some charcoal adhering to the corrosion products. The coins are visible in two stacks, one of the stacks has considerably more damage due to burning. Four coins are clearly visible in one stack, with one face exposed. No detail is visible on the exposed coin face - there is possibly a radiate crown, however this is uncertain due to the level of corrosion. The exposed coin has a diameter of 13.24mm. The amount of coins on the second stack is more difficult to assertain due to the fused and melte…
