A complete copper-alloy early Bronze Age probable axe-chisel (or diminutive axe). The object is a narrow, sub-triangular shape with a rounded butt and gently outwards curving narrow blade end. In profile the object is lenticular - expanding slightly towards the centre and narrowing towards each end. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded with the outer edge of the blade now entirely missing. With its small size and narrow body and cutting edge this object probably fits best into a group of objects that Needham (1996) describes as 'axe-chisels…

An incomplete flaked flint implement, probably a chisel, of late Neolithic or early Bronze Age date. A narrow, elongated blade, with an abrupt break across one end and culminating in a rounded point at the other. The break is patinated. The object is oval in cross-section at the damaged end, becoming triangular in cross-section towards the pointed end. One side curves inwards slightly. There is invasive, scaled retouch on both face and a patch of abrupt, short, irregular retouch enhancing the chisel-like shape of the pointed end. There is a small amount of cortex surviving on one face…

A copper-alloy fragment of a probably Bronze Age chisel, dating to 1100-800 BC. It is sub-rectangular in plan and tapers towards the complete end. This expanded end appears to be bevelled, suggesting that it is a blade. The other end is irregularly broken. The object is rectangular in cross-section and thins towards the blade. The surface of the metal is pitted with corrosion and the long edges are slightly damaged at the same length. See Pendleton (1999, fig.67, no.291) for a very similar example. See also PAS record: SF-498094 and SF-3041F9. Length: 53.33 mm Width: 15.00 …

A complete copper alloy awl or chisel of uncertain late Bronze Age to post-medieval date. It is rectangular in cross-section, tapering at one end to a chisel-like straight edge at one end. A fine, shiny green patina survives in places. Awls are difficult to date as there appears to have been little typological change from the Bronze Age to post-medieval periods, however, most copper-alloy examples probably date to the late Bronze Age. They were used to make holes in leather and wood and some may have been attached to a handle made from organic material. Length: 34.96mm, width: …

A complete cast copper-alloy socketed chisel of Late Bronze Age date and probable Ewart Park metalworking phase attribution c. 900-750 BC. In form it is very similar in appearance to socketed axes, though the small size of this object heavily infers that function as a chisel is far more likely. The socket mouth is widened and circular in plan, tapering slightly to the midpoint of the object before expanding outwards again towards the flared working end of the object. Preserved in good condition with an even greyish-coloured metal and encrustations covering some portions of the object,…

A copper-alloy chisel fragment dating to the Bronze Age. It is rectangular in plan as well as in cross section; one end is bevelled and it might be interpreted as the cutting edge while the other end tapers and becomes thinner towards the incomplete terminal due to corrosion. The object is very worn and pitted. 1100-850 BC in date. Length: 45.34 mm Width: 12.75 mm Thickness: 5.47 mm Weight: 15.76 g

An incomplete copper alloy object, possibly a flat tanged chisel of Bronze Age date. It is trapezoidal in shape with straight sides and expanding slightly towards one end. This expanded end it outwardly rounded and appears to be bevelled, suggesting that it is a blade. The other end is irregularly rounded, but appears to be a break. The object is rectangular in cross-section and of fairly even thickness along its length. The surface of the metal is heavily pitted with corrosion and the edges are damaged. Its bright green patina also suggests a prehistoric date. See Pendleton (1999,…

The item is possibly a copper-alloy Bronze Age (c. 1500 - 1150BC) small chisel or awl. The blade is square in cross section and tapers to a flat edge. One side of the blade tapers slightly more, making the edge on one side thinner and forming a slight concavity on this side. At the widest end of the blade there is an integral stop ridge which is semi-circular in plan and is partially broken. It would have been fully circular originally. It emerges perpendicular to the blade and tang, and is about 1.6mm thick. The blade protrudes from the centre of the face of this stop ridge on one f…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy tanged chisel dating to the Late Bronze Age (probably of the Ewart Park metalworking phase), c. 1100-800 BC. It is broadly triangular in plan and section, with a thinned working edge that thickens into a tang before abruptly truncating prior to the characteristic collar which separates the 'chisel' end from the hafted section. Preserved in poor condition with a pitted dark green patina with patches of active corrosion, it survives to a length of 41.40mm, 25.07mm wide at its working end and 5.23mm thick at its midpoint. It weighs 17.04g. A number of sim…
