An incomplete flat, rectangular copper-alloy monumental brass of Medieval date. The front face depicts the letter T in a decorative Lombardic form. The field behind is decorated with cross-hatched grooves. To the left of the T, at the top and bottom are two swirls, perhaps the remains of another letter. This suggests that it may have been cut from a larger piece. At the bottom of the plate is a rectangular border. The back face is undecorated. This monumental brass measures 42.26mm in length, 25.06mm in width, 4.42mm in thickness, 29.57g in weight. This monumental brass could…

A fragment of palimpsest monumental brass, of late medieval date. It is flat and rectangular in form. One original edge survives while the other three are broken. One face is engraved with lettering while the other is blank. On the engraved face there is an IA (with contraction mark above) followed by two further uprights, possibly forming a W. The purpose of the object was to act as a palimpsest memorial brass and is likely to be associated with funerary contexts. There are parallels for it at NMS-EE1748, NMS-CC09E7 and to a lesser extent SF-2A0495. The object is likely to date from …

A fragment from a monumental brass of probable Medieval date. Part of the top edge is preserved, with a few letters visible, but not enough to identify the original inscription. The surviving lettering perhaps reads []DM with horizontal contraction mark above in addition to two small crosses. A second word possibly begins INN, but this is uncertain due to the preservation of the object. The entire brass measures 64.83mm in width, 21.56mm in height, 3.35mm in thickness, and weighs 29.08g. This monumantal brass is of possible 15th century AD date.

A small fragment from the corner of a copper alloy Medieval monumental memorial brass. The bottom left hand corner of the original brass survives intact, the remainder missing due to old breaks. It is flat, sub-rectangular in form and is palimpsest in that it preserves decoration on both faces demonstrating use and re-use in two differing periods. The original or primary face has traces of figural decoration. This depicts one edge probably from a Medieval costume or figure with a relatively wide border that contains shaded decoration formed from multiple diagonal lines. The figural…

Initial E made from cast copper-alloy, possibly from a memorial brass. The letter is well formed and Lombardic in shape, having a curved back and a vertical line closing the loop at the front, the lower half of this is now missing due to an old break. The vertical line had a little curved projection at top and bottom, the latter no longer survives. The letter is slightly bent and it is not clear whether this is due to damage or original. It is rougher on the reverse and more polished on the upper surface. It measures 38.82 mm in length and is 29.29 mm wide, and is a maximum of 2.28 mm

An initial letter E made from cast copper alloy. It is possibly from a monumental brass. The letter is a Lombardic E with curved back and a vertical bar joining the sides and central bar. There are short curved projections to the top and bottom of the bar. The letter is 37mm in length and 31.45mm wide. It weighs 13.13g. It is flat, and 3.14mm thick at the centre of the curved back, and 2.45mm thick at the vertical bar. The reverse of the letter shows signs of wear, and the upper surface is slightly convex. An identical example comes from Arwarton, Suffolk, and is recorded, see SF8287.

Fragment from the marginal fillet inscription to a monumental brass, which has either never been installed or which has been lifted and reused for another purpose. It is broken into two adjoining fragments, which placed together measure 83mm in length and 43mm in width, and a thickness of 2mm. This is an important fragment because it is palimpsest, that it, it shows decorative work for inclusion in a monumental church brass on both sides. One side shows part of two words, the first ending 'lm', with a double-hooked abbreviation mark over the M, and the second beginning…

Portion of an inscription from a monumental brass of the early fifteenth century. The preserved fragment contains part of the date in gothic numeral letters, and is from the bottom line of a square or rectangular panelled inscription which would have been inset into the matrix beneath single or paired figures of the deceased. The form of the lettering is typical of inscriptions following the formula 'Hic jacet [Joe Bloggs] ... qui obijt ** die mensis ***** anno m cccc **** et [Josephine Bloggs] uxor eius qui obijt ** die mensis ***** anno m cccc **** cuius animarum propicietur deus a…

It measures 37 mm long and is 33 mm wide, and is a maximum of 3 mm thick. The use of a Lombardic E may suggest a 13th- or 14th-century date. Single letters from memorial brasses are uncommon; the usual technique was to cast wh…
