Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

Six copper-alloy fragments of an Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) reliquary box, dating to AD 650-700. The fragments refer to the main body of the box, the handle and the two lids. The main body consists of a thin sheet of metal that has been folded to take a cylindrical shape and then secured with two copper-alloy rivets, which are still visible along the overlapping edges; the line of junction was once covered by the handle, now detached. The bottom edge of the box is bent outwards at right angle to the body, creating a flange which was once soldered to a similar flange on the lid. The …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy nested cup-weight box dating to the Medieval period, c. 1250-1500. Only the lower portion of the box survives, with its lid and the weights themselves missing. It is circular in plan, with high sides that flare slightly towards the rim. From one edge protrudes the remains of a perforated double-lugged horizontal projection designed to function as a hinge for the lid, though most of this is now broken away in old damage. From the opposing edge, a single projecting vertical lug with a central aperture presumably forms part of the closing mechanism. The si…

A cast copper-alloy Roman bell-shaped stud dating to circa AD 43-410. It has a conical head that measures 25.46mm in diameter with a concave upper surface and central conical projection. Surrounding the central projection, and at the edge of the upper surface, are single circular grooves. The head tapers to a cylindrical base, with a slight groove where head and base meet. On the underside of the base are the corroded remains of an iron pin or bar that has extensive iron corrosion making its precise form uncertain, and is now mostly missing due to old breaks. The entire object measure…

It has a conical head that measures 23.24mm in diameter with a concave upper surface and central conical projection that has a flattened head. The head tapers to a cylindrical base, with a slight groove where head and base meet. On the underside of the base are the corroded remains of an iron pin or bar that was square in cross section and is now mostly missing due to old breaks. The entire object measures 23.24mm in maximum diameter (13.65mm in diameter at base of head), 11.20mm in height, and weighs 12.26g. T…

An incomplete copper alloy Roman lion-headed stud in the form of a stylised lion. It is circular in plan, pyramidal in section and with a hollow back face, missing most of its outer edge and central rivet due to old breaks. The lowest surviving part of the stud comprises the incomplete remains of an inclined platform or lip decorated with a band of multiple incised diagonal grooves representing the lion's mane. Above this is a more pronounced central circular projection with crudely incised eyes, possibly formed from single circle dots although this is uncertain due to the preservatio…

An incomplete copper alloy Roman lion-headed stud in the form of a stylised lion. It is circular in plan, pyramidal in section and with a hollow back face, missing its outer edge and the tip of the central rivet due to old breaks. What survives of the lowest part of the stud is undecorated and slopes steeply upwards. Above this there is a small, inclined platform or lip followed by a band of multiple curved engraved lines that represent the lion's mane. This is followed by a more pronounced central circular projection on to which there are two incised dots surrounded by semi-circular…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy weight box of Medieval date. It is missing its lid and the nested set of cup-weights that would have been placed inside it due to old breaks. The box is cup-shaped in form, circular in plan and flares slightly towards the rim. At one side of the rim is an integrally cast double semi-circular lug that is pierced and contains the corroded remains of a flat, rectangular lug that would have been integrally cast with the lid, enabling it to hinge. On the opposite side of the rim is a second pierced double lug that would have served as a catch to close the bo…

A complete cast copper-alloy Roman lion-headed stud for a box or casket. It is circular in plan and pyramidal in form with a hollow back face. The lowest edge of the front face flattens slightly to form a relatively broad border that is decorated with short incised strokes to represent the lion's mane. A more pronounced central projection creates the next step up and depicts the face. This is decorated with circular mouldings with central drilled dots for the eyes, as well as a row of short radiating depressions beneath the nose that delineate the mouth. Finally, at the very centre of…

An incomplete copper alloy Roman lion-headed stud. The stud is missing approximately one quarter of its lower surface due to old breaks. It is circular in plan and pyramidal in section with a hollow, concave reverse. The lowest part of the stud is undecorated, although perhaps flares slightly at the base. Above this there is a small, inclined platform or lip followed by a band of transverse engraved lines that represent the lion's mane. This is followed by a more pronounced projection on to which there are two incised dots surrounded by semi-circular incised lines to represent the lion…
