Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete lead bead of probable medieval to post-medieval date. It is biconical in shape, but one half is much shallower than the other and slightly truncated. The longer half is decorated with irregularly spaced longitudinal ridges around all sides. A small circular hole runs through the centre from top to botton. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded.
The object may have functioned as a decorative bead or was possibly the head of a dress pin with a separate shank passing through the hole.

Description: A complete gold sheet metal biconical bead with gold wire filigree decoration of early medieval (early Anglo-Saxon) date. The two sections of the bead are each made from sheet metal rolled into truncated cones leaving a hole in the centre of their apex. One of these holes is encircled by applied beaded wire, but this is missing on the other. The two sections are joined together at their bases, the join then covered by two strips of beaded wire encircling this point. The outer face of each section is decorated with strips of beaded wire bent into three elongated triangles p…

A complete ceramic bead of an uncertain date ranging from the Roman to Post Medieval periods. it is an irregular discoidal shape with a sloping profile. The central aperture is small <4mm in diameter. The exterior edge is decorated with two sets of four longitudinal incised grooves. There is seemingly a thick horizontal band running across approximately half of the exterior intersecting with the longitudinal grooves.
Beads are difficult to date without context. Consequently, a broad Roman to Post Medieval date is suggested here,
