A complete Neolithic finely worked polished stone axehead. It is an elongated sub-triangular shape and oval in cross-section, with straight slightly outwards curving sides, a narrow, rounded butt and a blade end that curves outwards only very slightly. It is composed of a coarse-grained basic intrusive rock that has probably undergone metamorphism, speckled white and blue-grey in colour. There is a patch of orange-brown straining on one face. It survives in good condition with only a small amount of damage to the butt end. Dr Emily Banfield (pers. com.) kindly comments …

A fragment of a Bronze Age axehead dating to circa 1600-800 BC. The extant element consists of the crescentic cutting edge, with abraded and pitted faces. It terminates in an ancient break just before the cutting edge making it unclear whether the axehead would have been flat or socketed.

A Bronze Age copper-alloy fragment of an axehead dating to circa 1600-800 BC. The extant peice consists of the crescentic cutting edge and lower blade. The break renders it difficult to determine the form of the complete axe - it could have been socketed but this is now unclear. As a result, it carries a broad Middle to Late Bronze Age date.  Length: 27mm; Width: 52.9mm; Thickness: 4.8mm; Weight: 47.24g.

Description: A fragment of a late Bronze Age socketed axe. Only the blade end and the inner part of the socket survives. The fragment is rectangular in cross-section, tapering towards the blade. The blade edge curves outwards and is damaged in places with a notch to one side. Each side of the fragment flares outwards towards the blade and gently inwards towards the break. A slight casting seam can be seen running longitudinally along the centre of one side, but this has largely worn away on the other side. The break has a rounded, rectangular depression in the centre, which is all that…

An incomplete Neolithic greenstone axehead dating to circa 4000-2350 BC. It is pointed oval in section. It flares outwards from the butt end to the crescentic cutting edge. The butt has some iron staining on it. The surface is singificantly weathered and rolled, with the original polished surface now having eroded. It is formed of greenstone, an igneous rock which found throughout the south west of England. has been subjected to low grade metamorphism, which is found throughout the south west of England. There are clusters around Dartmoor, Exmoor and the Land's End peninsula. Gi…

An incomplete Neolithic flint axehead dating to circa 4000-2500 BC. Sub-trapezoidal in plan and oval in section, the surviving piece now has chuns taken out of it and as a consequence the cutting edge does not survive intact. Both faces have been crudely polished and has been subsequently flaked. The flint has significant traces of iron staining. Length: 71.6mm; Width: 70.2mm; Thickness: 44.5mm; Weight: 210.34g.

A fragment of a Bronze Age developed flat axe or palstave dating to circa 1500-1100 BC.  The fragment comprises the narrow rectangular butt. It is triangular in section, tapering to the butt. The sides are straight and the faces flat. The fragmentary nature of the axe makes typological identification difficult but is consistent with either a developed flat axe or palstave of Middle Bronze Age date.  Length: 29.5mm; Width: 24.5mm; Thickness: 8.4mm; Weight: 25.11g.

A fragment of a copper-alloy possible Bronze Age axe. It is sub-triangular in shape and wedge-shaped in profile. One side curves outwards slightly and is relatively sharp suggesting that it may be part of a cutting edge and the shorter side adjacent to this also appears to be complete, while there is a rough break across the longer inner edge. The surface is heavily corroded and the break is very well worn. Because of the damage and corrosion it is uncertain whether this is definitely a Bronze Age axe and if so what type of axe this may be. It should be noted,…
