A heavily debased silver denarius of Septimius Severus (AD 193-211). The coin clearly has a very low silver content, and may be a core for a plated copy. The coin type was struck in AD 197, and is RIC number 97, the reverse depicting Hercules standing right, resting on club and holding bow and lion skin on left arm. When legible the reverse inscription would read HERCVLI DEFENS and the obverse inscription would read L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP VIIII. The coin measures 15.39 mm in diameter and weighs 1.9 grams.
