Record ID: SF-91E324
Object type: BEAD
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete lead bead of probable medieval to post-medieval date. It is biconical in shape, but one half is much shallower than the other and slightly truncated. The longer half is decorated with irregularly spaced longitudinal ridges around all sides. A small circular hole runs through the centre from top to botton. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded.
The object may have functioned as a decorative bead or was possibly the head of a dress pin with a separate shank passing through the hole.

A complete lead medieval seal matrix. It is a flattened disc-shape with a broken suspenion lug projecting from one side. The simple motif and personalised legend suggests a 13th century date (Harvey & McGuiness 1996, 87…

Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete lead post-medieval cloth seal. Both discs survive, but the connecting strip is now missing. One disc features raised unclear letting with what appears to be the date 155[] below. The other features a sheep fleece/hanging sheep surrounded by a circle of pellets.
See PAS records YORYM-1684C3, PUBLIC-A6EBF2, NMS-F74ACA, HESH-136956, LIN-7988E4, DUR-AE5581 for comparison. The sheep fleec/hanging sheep features on the City of Leeds coat of arms and it seems likely that these seals are alnage/subsidy seals associated with the wool trade there.

An incomplete lead post-medieval cloth seal dating to the year AD 1664. Only one disc of an originally two-part seal survives. The outer face has the raised letters 'CAR/ SAY/ 1664' in three lines. There is a small break to one side where a strip would have projecting originally, attaching this to another disc.
The lettering suggests that this is most likely to be aa clothier, weaver or searcher's seal. Egan (1995, vii) writes that 'stamped lead seals were widely used in the European textile industry during the late-medieval/early-modern period. They were att…
