A complete lead steelyard weight of possible Roman date. It is biconical in shape with the corroded remains of an iron rod protruding from either end. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded. Although steelyard weights were in use from the Roman to post-medieval periods, biconical examples with iron extending from both ends tend to be of Roman date. Length: 29mm, diameter: 33.82mm, weight: 124.87g

Roman to post-medieval steelyard weight, made of lead with an iron core. It is sub-conical (not perfectly circular or oval). The iron core projects from the apex as an incomplete loop (now a mere pair of stumps terminating in worn breaks) and from the base, off-centre, as a small hemispherical protrusion. Not closely datable. 1st to 18th century. Diameter (at base): 38.4 x 34.9mm. Height: 36.6mm. Weight 130.4g

An incomplete, cast, lead weight, of probable Roman to Medieval date (c. AD 43-1350). The weight is conical in form with a flat, tapering up from the sub-circular base to a truncated apex. At this point are two iron protrusions, probably remnants of an iron attachment loop, which is now missing. An incomplete cast, lead steelyard weight, probably dating to the Roman period (c. AD 43-410). The weight is broadly bi-conical in form with both sections tapering to a rounded point. One section appears slightly truncated; it is possible that this would have been the site of an attachment loop would have been attached. This would probably have been made of iron. Although minimal there is some evidence of iron corrosion on the surface of the weight at one apex.  The surface of the weight is undecorated and is patinated creamy-brown with patches of grey. …
