Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Roman to post-medieval steelyard weight, made of lead with an iron core. It is sub-conical (not perfectly circular or oval). Object type: FIGURINE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Head and neck of an animal figurine, apparently a dog, of unknown date. It is made of lead and may be a model for a finished version in a more durable material. It begins with a worn transverse break across the neck, which is oval (near circular) in cross-section. It soon expands in thickness and nearly twice as much in width to form the head. The head is long and sleek, with prominent cheekbones and triangular outward- and rearward-pointing ears. The top of the cranium is vaguely lozenge-shaped and the eyes are suggested by hollows between the forward end of this and the cheekbones. T…

Object type: APOTHECARY WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Small rectangular lead weight, probably an apothecary’s weight. The front bears a moulded design of five wedge-shaped ridges radiating from an off-centre point to meet a rectangular ridged frame at the edges, expanding in width as they go. Each ridge is of a different length and they are unequally spaced. The reverse is undecorated. No close parallels yet noted, but it's comparable to NMS-3F0FCA and NMS-3EED0D. 14th to 16th century. Length: 14.3mm. Width: 10.9mm. Thickness: 2.1mm. 2.27g, or approximately 35 apothecaries’ grains.

Object type: SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete post-medieval or modern lead seal. It is flat and originally circular (about forty percent is missing from one side) with a small, irregularly-shaped perforation or void near the original edge. One face bears an incomplete stamped geometric design, which is probably a Star of David, while the reverse is blank. The seal may be from meat or some other goods where similar restrictions apply, and denotes that the merchandise is kosher. 16th to 20th century. Diameter: 26.3mm. Thickness: 3.9mm. Weight: 8.4g

Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Biconical lead steelyard weight, of probable Roman date, with an embedded U-shaped, circular cross-sectioned copper-alloy loop at the top. Another copper-alloy loop, also circular in cross-section, is linked to the first one. This is teardrop shaped, with one terminal coiled three times into a now vacant tube and the other terminating close to the tube’s lower-side opening. The coiled terminal seems likely to be broken and missing further coils if it was to suspend the weight securely. If this is the case, the break is worn. The upper and lower ‘halves’ of the weight are of…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Unidentified decorative lead object of probable medieval or post-medieval date. It was originally flat but is now somewhat distorted and partially folded double. The design is made in moulded relief and consists of two scrolling S-shapes (one retrograde) touching and facing each other in symmetry. The outside edges of these form the outer perimeter of the object as a whole. Each S-shape is composed of twin curving lines with a series of regularly spaced pellets in between. The forward-facing S-shape contains thirteen pellets and this appears to be mirrored in the retrograde one. Howev…

Post-medieval two-part lead cloth seal. Disc two is stamped with a curvilinear motif forming at least three intertwined figures-of eight, within a circular beaded border. Only that part of the design that fell on the hammered rivet of disc one is preserved. A small trace of the beaded border remains visible extending into disc two proper, but elsewhere the rest of the design has been lost to wear or poor striking.
