Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Roman to post-medieval steelyard weight, made of lead with an iron core. It is sub-conical (not perfectly circular or oval). The iron core projects from the apex as an incomplete loop (now a mere pair of stumps terminating in worn breaks) and from the base, off-centre, as a small hemispherical protrusion. Not closely datable. 1st to 18th century. Diameter (at base): 38.4 x 34.9mm. Height: 36.6mm. Weight 130.4g

Head and neck of an animal figurine, apparently a dog, of unknown date. It is made of lead and may be a model for a finished version in a more durable material. It begins with a worn transverse break across the neck, which is oval (near circular) in cross-section. It soon expands in thickness and nearly twice as much in width to form the head. The head is long and sleek, with prominent cheekbones and triangular outward- and rearward-pointing ears. The top of the cranium is vaguely lozenge-shaped and the eyes are suggested by hollows between the forward end of this and the cheekbones. T…

A complete lead spindle whorl or possibly weight of uncertain date. It is plano-convex in shape with a convex upper surface and a flat base. It is sub circular in shape with a central circular hole of internal diameter 7.62mm. The weight measures 24.26mm in diameter and is 8.90mm thick. It weighs 22.06g. It has a light gray/white patina.  Objects such as these were used for a long period of time for a variety of functions with little change in form. It is regular enough in shape to suggest that it may have been used as a spindle whorl,…

Two lead truncated conical weights or spindle whorls of uncertain Roman to post-medieval date.  Objects such as these were used for a long period of time for a variety of functions with little change in form. They may be crude spindle whorls, but seem more likely to be weights are are too irregular in shape. 1. Diameter: 19.77mm, thickness: 11.53mm, weight: 16.07g (diameter of central hole: c.7.35mm) 2. Diameter: 16.38mm, thickness: 10.22mm, weight: 11.37g  (diameter of central hole: c.7.2mm)

A complete lead weight of uncertain date. The object is disc-shaped and perforated with a small off-centre hole. It could possibly have been used as a spindle whorl, but seems too irregularly shaped to have functioned correctly. Because the object lacks diagnostic features it could easily date from the Roman to post-medieval period. Diameter: 33.36mm, diameter of central hole: 11.17mm, thickness: 7.21mm, weight: 51.60g

A complete lead weight of uncertain date. The object is formed from a sheet of lead rolled into a narrow tube leaving a seam down one side and a narrow hole through the centre. Objects such as these were in use for a long period and as such are difficult to date closely without a secure archaeological context. Length: 33.97mm, width: 12.11mm, thickness: 9.50mm, weight: 16.71g

An complete lead Iron Age to Post-Medieval biconical spindle whorl. It is formed from two flattened, truncated cones, joined at the base with a narrow circular hole (c.6mm) through the centre (Walton-Rogers Type B3). The surface is worn, whitish grey in colour and pitted in places. Undecorated spindle whorls of this form were in use from the Iron Age well into the post-medieval period with little change in form and are therefore difficult to date precisely. Walton-Rogers (2007, 24-5) suggests that bi-conical whorls with narrow central holes (
