Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete lead hooked tag of probable Early Medieval date. It consists of a circular boss with two pierced attachment loops, the hook is missing, with iron corrosion present around a circular hole in the disc. Decoration comprises a prominent boss in the centre of three sets of double-line in counter-relief. Hooked tags manufactured from lead are very uncommon, and it is possible it is a mould rather than a finished tag. Similar examples can be found on PAS (see NMS-412B7B). There is also a similar example with similar decorative motif made of lead from Cod…

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A lead complete possible Viking gaming piece. It is oval in cross-section, with a copper-alloy rod in the centre, it has a flat, mis-shapen base. It tapers towards its upper terminal end. A similar, solid, possible gaming piece has been found at Long Melford, Suffolk see SF-C01997, Little Wilbraham, Cambridgehsire see SF-50B784, and two hollow very simliar examples have also been found at Little Wilbraham, Cambridgeshire, see SF-6F5256 and SF-6F7361. An alternative function of these objects would have been as weights rather than gaming pieces.

Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete probable Early Medieval lead spindle whorl dating to circa AD 500-850. Cast in one piece it is comprised of a flat base with steep, conical walls and a central perforation with a diameter of 6.8mm
Though difficult to date without secure stratigraphic information, spindle whorls of this form are consistent with Walton Rogers form A1-2, dating to the early to middle Saxon period (2007).

Record ID: SWYOR-DB28A0
Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An early Medieval lead spindle whorl of Walton Rogers form A1 dating from AD 850-1000. It has a flat base with a domed and slightly flattened apex and a central hole of 9.3mm in diameter. The object is 27.0mm in diameter, 13.2mm thick, and weighs 45.79g. The whorl has a mid-grey patina.
A similar example is SWYOR-057095. Form A1 whorls are known from AD 500 - 1000, but the size of the central hole (over 9mm) makes a late Saxon date more likely.

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete lead early medieval (Anglo-Saxon) disc brooch. Only a small fragment of the outer edge of the disc survives with a single looped lug projecting from the outer edge of the reverse. The outer face is decorated with a faint line of small raised pellets along the outer edge with two parallel lines of small incised squares behind this. The central design is unclear, making it difficult to assign the object to a specific tuype. The object has been bent slightly in profile, the surface is corroded and the breaks show little corrosion.
With its flat profile and decorative bor…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete lead probable model for an early medieval (early Anglo-Saxon) buckle. Only the curved outer edge now survives, while the apparently straight and narrowed strap bar is missing. One face of the surviving section is convex and the inner edge of the other face convex. Both have faceted edges. The surface of the metal is pitted and corroded.
Manufacture of a buckle in lead is extremely unusual and impractical and no others of this date have been recorded with the PAS (apart perhaps from NLM-A21445). Instead the object may have functioned as a manufacturing model - see para…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete lead and copper alloy weight of possible early medieval date The object is formed from a disc of lead with a rectangular piece of copper alloy set into one face and a small trapzoidal piece of copper alloy set into the other. It is slightly misshapen and the surface of the lead is hevaily corroded.
Lead weights with copper alloy mounts or coins impressed into them are a feature of the 9th to 10th century AD. This example may be an imitation of more elaborate weights of this period although it lacks diagnostic features that would confirm this. See also a similar example r…
